Seoul Central District Prosecutors’ Office has revealed that a woman in her 20s, who allegedly extorted 300 million KRW (about $219,600) from Son Heung Min (32, Tottenham Hotspur), captain of South Korea’s national football team by threatening to disclose her pregnancy, had previously attempted the same kind of blackmail against another man.
On June 10, the Criminal Division 3 of the Seoul Central District Prosecutors’ Office (Chief Prosecutor Choi Soon Ho) announced the indictment and arrest of the woman, Yang, in her 20s, on charges of extortion, along with a man in his 40s, Yong, on attempted extortion charges.
According to the prosecution, “Yang initially tried to demand money from another man by informing him of a pregnancy but abandoned her attempt when he did not respond. She then targeted Son Heung Min, claiming she was pregnant with his child and demanded money.”
The prosecutors further stated, “Yang spent all the money extorted from Son Heung Min on luxury goods and other expenses, leading to financial hardship. She then attempted to extort money again from the victim through her boyfriend, B.”
It was initially reported that Yong demanded an additional 70 million KRW (approximately $51,200) from Son Heung Min after Yang had already obtained 300 million KRW (about $219,600), acting alone. However, prosecutors have confirmed that Yong’s demand was also a conspiracy with Yang.
Yang, who is Son Heung Min’s former partner, is accused of threatening to reveal her pregnancy by sending a fetal ultrasound image to Son Heung Min in June last year, extorting over 300 million KRW (about $219,600). During this process, she signed a written agreement pledging not to disclose the pregnancy publicly.
In March this year, Yang and Yong, who had since become romantically involved, allegedly conspired to approach Son Heung Min’s side again to extort an additional 70 million KRW (approximately $51,200) but failed.
Following Son Heung Min’s complaint, Gangnam Police arrested the suspects on the evening of May 14 and requested arrest warrants the following day. The court issued the warrants citing concerns over evidence tampering and flight risk.
