A man in his 30s was apprehended by police for posting malicious comments about the families of victims of the Jeju Air crash on an online community.
According to the Cybercrime Investigation Unit of the Jeonnam Police Agency, the suspect, identified as Mr. A, was arrested at 2:10 PM on January 4 for allegedly posting deragatory remarks targeting the families of the Jeju Air plane crash victims.
Mr. A is accused of uploading the offensive post on an online community site from his residence in Seoul on December 31, the third day after the plane crash. The post reportedly was a defamatory post about the compensation offered to the victims' families.
During questioning, Mr. A explained his motive, stating, "I wrote it thoughtlessly after seeing the news." The police are currently investigating whether he committed additional offenses before deciding on further legal action.
Authorities are also investigating eight other defamatory posts related to the victims and families of the Jeju Air crash.
Earlier, on January 1, the police established a dedicated investigation team led by the Director of the National Investigation Headquarters to handle malicious posts related to the Jeju Air passenger plane accident.
