Korea University announced that it will deduct up to 20 points from applicants with a history of school violence in next year's university admissions.
Kim Dong Won, the president of Korea University, stated in a press conference today (March 21) that the university will penalize applicants whose characteristics of altruism, leadership, and community consciousness differ from what the university seeks in candidates.
President Kim said, "Currently, even a 0.1-point difference can affect the outcome (of admission), so a deduction of 20 points would practically make admission impossible."
Yesterday, on March 20, Korea University's academic affairs committee convened and passed a resolution to deduct 20 points from regular admission applicants in the 2025 admissions who have received disciplinary actions such as forced transfer (No. 8) or expulsion (No. 9) due to school violence, out of a total of 1,010 points.
The university intends to incorporate a qualitative assessment of community engagement skills into the evaluation process for rolling admissions applicants.
Regarding the allocation of additional admissions to medical schools in the Seoul area, President Kim commented, "It is not a significant issue that the government has expanded admissions focusing on local universities." He added, "There are doubts about whether local universities have the infrastructure to nurture doctors." He also stated, "Efforts are being made through dialogue to minimize damage to the public and patients and to ensure that medical procedures are not immediately suspended."
In regards to the 'College of Liberal Arts and Sciences,' which will admit a total of 415 freshmen for the first time next year, President Kim stated, "The College of Liberal Arts will not partake, while the College of Science is contemplating involvement in Type 2." He further explained, "Instead of engaging and potentially diminishing quotas, it is preferable to maintain its integrity to safeguard rare and less popular disciplines. Therefore, each college has been granted autonomy to make its own decision."
The 'College of Liberal Arts and Sciences' is divided into Type 1, where freshmen can freely choose any major excluding health and education majors, and Type 2, where majors are chosen within broad units such as departments and colleges.
