Director Bong Joon Ho has received a Prime Minister’s commendation in recognition of his contribution to national finances through diligent tax payments.
Recognized as a cultural artist who elevated the global standing of Korean cinema and as the head of a production company, Bong was praised not only for his creative achievements but also for fulfilling his social responsibilities through transparent and consistent tax compliance.
On March 3, Bong attended the 60th Taxpayers’ Day ceremony held at COEX in Seoul, where he was awarded the Prime Minister’s commendation in his capacity as CEO of his production company, Offscreen. Taxpayers’ Day is an annual government-hosted event that honors individuals and corporations who contribute to the national treasury and promote a culture of responsible tax payment.
The government stated that Bong has played a significant role in promoting the diversity and artistic excellence of South Korea’s film industry on the global stage through his work as a director and producer. In addition, his faithful reporting and payment of taxes on related earnings were cited as contributing to the strengthening of the country’s fiscal foundation. Given that many professionals in the cultural industry earn income on a project-by-project basis - often making tax management complex - his transparent and consistent compliance was highly commended.
Bong has long been recognized both at home and abroad for his cinematic achievements. In 2019, his film Parasite made history as the first Korean movie to win the Academy Award for Best Picture, marking a milestone in global film history. As a creator who has achieved both critical acclaim and commercial success, this latest honor carries added significance for acknowledging not only his artistic accomplishments but also his commitment to social responsibility.
Other figures from the cultural, sports, and broadcasting sectors were also named exemplary taxpayers at the event. Former national figure skating champion Kim Yuna and broadcaster Kim Sung Joo were selected as exemplary taxpayers and received commendations from the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy and Finance. Their long-standing careers and consistent tax compliance were recognized as key contributions.
The 60th Taxpayers’ Day ceremony was jointly hosted by the Ministry of Economy and Finance and the National Tax Service. A total of 569 individuals and corporate representatives were honored for exemplary tax payments and cooperation with tax administration, including Bong, Kim Yuna, and Kim Sung Joo.
Taxpayers’ Day is not merely an occasion to recognize those who pay large sums in taxes. Rather, it underscores the importance of a transparent and responsible tax culture. Taxes form the backbone of national finances and fund public services, welfare programs, and social infrastructure. The government emphasized that by widely publicizing examples of responsible taxpayers across various sectors, it aims to encourage a culture of voluntary compliance.

From a director who expanded the horizons of Korean cinema on the global stage, to an athlete who made history on the ice, to a broadcaster who has long been a presence in households nationwide, these accomplished figures came together under the shared value of responsible tax payment. In that sense, the award highlights tax compliance as another meaningful way to give back to society.
