Tzuyu of TWICE is receiving widespread support after responding to a comment criticizing her appearance.
On February 16th KST, a netizen sent Tzuyu a message through the paid fan communication app “Bubble,” writing, “Can’t you lose some leg weight? The backup dancer is slimmer than you.”
Tzuyu responded wittily, “Thanks. Save your money and spend it wisely.” The platform requires a monthly subscription fee of approximately 5,000 KRW(~3.5 USD).
As screenshots of the exchange spread across online communities and social media, backlash quickly followed. Not only TWICE fans but also international K pop fans criticized the comment.
In particular, following TWICE’s world tour concert held on the 15th, a fan cam of Tzuyu drew attention overseas, with some international fans questioning Korea’s beauty standards. In the video, Tzuyu performed powerful choreography wearing a short bodysuit paired with fur boots. One overseas fan commented, “I really hate Korea’s beauty standards. ‘Slim legs’? That makes no sense. There should be more female idols like Tzuyu,” criticizing what they described as strict local expectations.
The incident has reignited debate among global K pop fans regarding intense appearance based evaluations within the Korean entertainment industry. Meanwhile, some Korean netizens pushed back against broad generalizations, stating, “Tzuyu has been recognized as a visual member since debut,” and “It’s unreasonable to generalize an entire country’s beauty standards based on a few opinions.”
In response to Tzuyu’s calm handling of the situation, many netizens expressed support, leaving comments such as, “Paying money just to leave a malicious comment?” “Tzuyu’s response was classy,” and “Tzuyu has a glamorous figure.”
