Reports have emerged in Taiwanese media claiming that singer Koo Jun yup (DJ Koo) is embroiled in an inheritance dispute following the death of his wife, the late Barbie Hsu. Hsu’s family has firmly denied the allegations, calling them “malicious” and “ill-intentioned.”
According to Taiwanese outlet ETtoday on February 10, some local media outlets recently reported that Koo Jun Yup was preparing for a legal battle with his mother-in-law over Barbie Hsu’s estate, suggesting that relations between the two sides were far more complicated than they appeared on the surface.
In response, Barbie Hsu’s mother immediately dismissed the rumors, stating, “I strongly dislike lawsuits that waste money and manpower. I decline.” She added, “I now call Koo Jun Yup my son. He loved my daughter deeply and respected me, and I love him as well.”
Barbie Hsu’s younger sister, Dee Hsu, also expressed her anger through her manager, saying, “The intentions of those spreading these rumors are extremely impure and vile.” She continued, “Brother-in-law DJ Koo gave my sister the purest love and allowed her to experience true happiness. He is our family, and we will protect him, never hurt him.”
According to Taiwanese media reports, Barbie Hsu’s estate is estimated to be worth at least 650 million TWD (approximately 28.6 billion KRW or 19.64 million USD). Under Taiwanese law, the inheritance is to be divided equally into thirds among DJ Koo and Hsu’s two minor children. In February of last year, DJ Koo stated, “All of the assets were accumulated through Barbie’s blood and sweat to protect the family she loved. I intend to give all authority over my share to my mother-in-law.” He added that he planned to take legal measures through a lawyer to ensure the children’s shares would be protected until they reach adulthood, preventing any outside interference.
DJ Koo and Barbie Hsu first dated in the late 1990s before separating, only to reunite more than 20 years later and marry in 2022. Barbie Hsu passed away in February last year due to pneumonia complications after contracting influenza during a trip to Japan.
Following his wife’s passing, DJ Koo is reported to have visited Jinbaoshan Cemetery almost daily. On February 3, marking the first anniversary of Barbie Hsu’s death, an unveiling ceremony was held for a memorial statue personally designed by DJ Koo.
In a heartfelt Instagram post, he wrote, “I lift my heavy body and wonder what kind of food I should make today. What should I make that you would like? When I pack food and drive to Jinbao Mountain, tears flow endlessly from my longing for you. My Xiyuan… Xiyuan…When we meet again next time, forever… forever, we will be together. I miss you to death.”
