Singer and actor Kim Jae Joong is returning to the big screen.
On January 13, production company Mystery Pictures announced, “The film 'The Shrine' (directed by Kazuyoshi Kumakiri) has been confirmed for an advance theatrical release in Japan on February 6.”
'The Shrine' is an occult horror film that begins with the mysterious disappearance of college students who venture into an abandoned shrine deep in the mountains of Kobe, Japan, to conduct a field investigation.
Kim Jae Joong takes on the role of Myeong Jin, a shaman. The film marks his first-ever challenge in the horror genre. He portrays a dark hero standing on the boundary between gods and demons, delivering a performance noted for its weighty presence.

Actress Gong Seong Ha stars opposite him as Yumi, Myeong Jin’s junior from college and a project manager. The story follows the pair as they work together to uncover the true identity of the malevolent spirit behind the disappearances.
The film is helmed by Japanese director Kazuyoshi Kumakiri, known for 'Yoko' (2023), which won three awards at the 25th Shanghai International Film Festival. This project marks his first time directing a Korean film.
Kumakiri’s signature style—his intense exploration of human psychology and extreme emotional states—is expected to create strong synergy with the occult horror genre.
'The Shrine' was filmed entirely on location in Kobe, where the story is set, a choice that has been praised for heightening the ominous atmosphere and sense of realism.
Following its advance release in Japan, the film is scheduled to be released for audiences in South Korea as well.
