At this year's 'Melon Music Awards,' held on December 20 KST, aespa attended as both performers and nominees, taking home three awards across different categories. However, following the event, Giselle drew attention for her manner while watching BLACKPINK Jennie's performance, as some netizens accused her of alleged 'rudeness' for resting her chin on one hand during the stage.
According to the netizens, as this type of gesture is typically considered culturally inappropriate, especially when done by a younger person in the presence of respected seniors, onlookers claimed that Giselle was showing a disrespectful attitude while Jennie was performing.
On December 21, Giselle addressed fans during a livestream, explaining that from aespa's assigned seats at the event, the stage was barely visible, particularly from the corner where she was seated. Due to the angle, her view was obstructed to the point where she could not properly see the LED screen or even the teleprompter. According to Giselle, she basically "could not see anything."
Netizens quickly pointed out that Giselle was likely indirectly addressing the online controversy surrounding her attitude, clarifying that her behavior was not related to watching Jennie's performance itself.
Meanwhile, fans on community forums also noted that Giselle likely "did not deserve the hate to begin with" and criticized her antis for "making a big deal out of nothing."
Reactions to the issue and Giselle's recent livestream include:
"They were all standing during G-Dragon’s stage, but they moved to the side. I guess it was because they couldn’t see well."
"Seriously, stop bashing girl groups already. I’m so sick of it I could die."
"It really feels like aespa gets bashed in an organized way, and there are so many people going along with it. It’s not even a social issue, but at some point they got framed as an easy target to hate."
"Seems like that section couldn’t see the stage properly."
"If you can’t see, how are you supposed to react?"
"Couldn’t they at least hear the sound?"
"People pretending to be Jennie fans just to bash girl groups should tone it down. If you look at YouTube or Twitter, they’re all hyping boy groups, but suddenly they’re Jennie fans at times like thisㅋㅋㅋㅋ In the end, they’re just getting Jennie hated. Do you really think Jennie fans would act like that? They’re just trying to pin it on them."
"Oh yeah, I’ve seen my fave also switch seats because they couldn’t see the stage. It must’ve really been blocked. Giselle’s seat was kind of in a corner anyway… But honestly, even if this wasn’t the case, it wouldn’t have been an issue. This is ridiculous."
"aespa is definitely getting reverse viral hate."
"The malicious comments on Giselle’s Instagram are way too much… please sue them."
"It’s funny how people are nitpicking her attitude while watching the stage… Jennie's not some legendary elderly senior. Who is Jennie for people to be policing Giselle's attitude like this? I wasn’t even into aespa, but now I just feel bad for them."
"They’re still making a fuss about a senior watching a stage with their chin in their handㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ"
"They reacted just fine when their own VCR came on in the same seats though."
"Honestly, I thought the reactions were insaneㅋㅋㅋ You couldn’t see the monitor or the stage well, so how were they supposed to react;; (Not saying not reacting is wrong) The location just seemed like that kind of spot. People need to chill with the forced hate, this is absurd."
"They seriously have to explain this…? And also, people can just shift their posture for a moment. It’s not like they were sitting weird or anything. What is this."
"So did Jennie have good reactions during EXO’s and G-Dragon’s stages? I didn’t watch, so I’m curious."
"Yeah, the aespa section really was a bad viewing spot. I know because my fave couldn’t see during EXO’s stage, so they moved to the right where there were empty seats to watch. Once one person moved, everyone on the left rushed over to the right as much as possible. From the audience perspective, the singer seats faced that way, so from the artists’ point of view, the right side probably wasn’t visible and they moved left instead."
"Getting dragged just for reactionsㅋㅋㅋ"
"They’re not Jennie fans, they’re just bitter people using Jennie to bash aespaㅋㅋ Especially these days on Twitter, aren’t all the boy group obsessed types clenching their teeth and hating on aespa together? Those are exactly the kinds of people who use idols like Jennie."
