The operator of the YouTube channel 'Sojang', who was convicted of creating and spreading false videos about IVE member Jang Wonyoung, has appealed to the Supreme Court after failing to overturn his sentence in the appellate court.
According to Starship Entertainment, the channel operator, identified as A, filed an appeal with the Incheon District Court on November 14th KST, claiming that the prison sentence was “too heavy” and that the order to forfeit earnings was “unjust.”
Earlier, on November 11, the Incheon District Court’s Criminal Division 1-3 upheld the original ruling from the first trial and sentenced A to two years in prison, suspended for three years, along with a forfeiture of 210 million KRW(approximately 145,000 USD) and 120 hours of community service.
A was indicted on charges including defamation and insult under the Act on Promotion of Information and Communications Network Utilization and Information Protection, after uploading 23 false videos targeting seven individuals—including Jang Wonyoung and other well-known figures—between October 2021 and June of last year.
The prosecution analyzed A’s accounts and reported that he earned 250 million KRW over two years through the distribution of fabricated videos. A, meanwhile, continues to argue that she produced the videos “for the public interest,” which was a topic of public attention.
