Singer Jung Dong Won avoided prosecution over allegations of driving without a license after receiving a suspension of indictment from prosecutors.
According to the Seoul Western District Prosecutors’ Office, on November 6, prosecutors decided to suspend indictment against Jung, who had been referred to the office for violating the Road Traffic Act by driving without a valid license.
A suspension of indictment means that while the offense is acknowledged, prosecutors choose not to take the case to trial after considering various circumstances surrounding the incident.
The case originated in 2023, when Jung, then 16 years old, drove a car without a license in Hadong, South Gyeongsang Province, at an age when obtaining a driver’s license is not legally permitted.
Jung’s agency explained in September that the singer “practiced driving for about 10 minutes near his hometown in Hadong, on a mountain road close to his home.”
The incident later became the subject of blackmail, as an acquaintance identified as A allegedly demanded 200 million KRW (about 137,363 USD) from Jung in exchange for not releasing a video of him driving.
Jung reportedly refused the demand and filed a police report despite the potential legal consequences. The suspects involved in the extortion are currently under arrest and facing trial.
This is not the first time Jung faced a similar charge. In March 2023, he was caught riding a motorcycle on a highway and received the same suspension of indictment disposition.
