JAURIM’s Kim Yoon Ah has just opened up about her struggle with cranial nerve paralysis, and how it’s affected her journey with music.
On November 14, legendary band JAURIM made an appearance on ‘The Seasons,’ performing their debut song from nearly 30 years ago. The band recently announced the release of their 12th full album, 'LIFE!' and their plans to continue their active career. In a post-performance interview, Kim Yoon Ah candidly revealed the unique motivation and urgency behind this album.
She opened up about her decision to make the new album despite her health struggles: “My health wasn't improving, and I was at a crossroads about whether I could continue making music," she said. "I realized that I didn't know when my life would end, and that this album could be my last. That's why I realized I had to do everything I could before I died."
Last July, Kim Yoon Ah revealed her ongoing health struggles to fans. “In 2011, after producing JAURIM's eighth album, my immune system was so weakened that I developed cranial nerve paralysis. I have a congenital immunodeficiency and have to receive monthly treatment. It affected my senses of smell, hearing, taste, pain, heat and cold, my facial and upper body muscles, and even my vagus nerve… I also still have a vocal impediment from it, but I’m trying to overcome it.”
She explained that this experience changed her outlook on life: “Since then, I've come to believe that my life might end at any moment. So, every time I work on something, I think, 'This could be my last one,' and I pour everything I have into it."
When making JAURIM’s new album, Kim Yoon Ah worked as hard as she could to complete it. “I pushed myself, telling myself, 'I can do this. I need to do my best.' I tried to create a rich and layered sound." Host Kwon Jung Yeol remarked, "Most people who experience health issues try to focus on simply enjoying life, but Kim Yoon Ah was more dedicated to music. I think that's why she was able to complete JAURIM’s 12th album, in the end."
Jaurim's 12th album, "LIFE!" showcases the profound depth of a 29-year-old band, along with the desperate feeling of "not knowing when this could be the end." Kim Yoon Ah's struggle with illness, overcoming it, and her dedication to music make this comeback all the more passionate and meaningful.
