Actress Song Hye Kyo and Sungshin Women’s University professor Seo Kyung Deok have joined forces once again.
On the 17th, in honor of Korea’s “Day of Patriotic Martyrs,” Professor Seo released a multilingual video titled “Breaking Through the Barriers of the Era: Courtesan Kim Hyang-hwa, Who Called for Independence.”
According to Professor Seo, the four-minute video was planned by him and sponsored by actress Song Hye Kyo. The video highlights the historical moment when Kim Hyang Hwa and more than 30 gisaengs (Korean female entertainers trained in music, arts, and dance) took out Korean flags in front of Jahye Hospital at Hwaseong Haenggung and launched an independence demonstration. It also emphasizes how their bold cries, even in front of a police station, inspired “gisaeng independence movements” across various regions of the country.

Professor Seo explained, “This is the fifth video produced to shed light on the lives of female independence activists who are not well known to the public, following Jeong Jeong Hwa, Yun Hui Sun, Kim Maria, and Park Cha Jeong.” He added, “Going forward, I plan to continue working with Ms. Song Hye Kyo to create more multilingual videos about female independence activists and share them widely around the world.”
The video is currently being shared not only on YouTube but also across social media platforms, as well as with Korean communities around the world.
Meanwhile, over the past 14 years, Seo Kyung Deok and Song Hye Kyo have donated Korean-language guidebooks, Korean signboards, and relief artworks of independence activists to 39 independence movement sites around the world.
