At the press conference for Netflix’s global hit 'KPop Demon Hunters,' held on October 15 at CGV Yongsan I’Park Mall in Seoul, Korean American singer and songwriter Ejae shared heartfelt stories about her family and creative inspiration.
Ejae composed the film’s soundtrack “Golden” and voiced Rumi, a member of the in-movie girl group HUNTR/X. She has captured global attention with her catchy melodies, unique tone, and powerful vocals. The song “Golden” topped the Billboard Hot 100 for eight consecutive weeks, proving the worldwide popularity of 'KPop Demon Hunters.'
Reflecting on her sudden rise to fame, Ejae said, “Just two months ago, I was simply a songwriter. It still feels surreal to receive so much love and attention.”
She explained that participating in 'KPop Demon Hunters' was a meaningful opportunity to showcase Korean culture to audiences around the world. During the event, Ejae also mentioned her grandfather, Shin Young Kyun, one of Korea’s most respected veteran actors.“I think singing is a form of acting. You have to be completely immersed in it,” she said. “When I was young, my grandfather told me, ‘Even when you sing, you are performing.’ I have always remembered those words.”
She went on to express how deeply she was inspired by his perseverance. “My grandfather went through many hardships. Watching him work so hard gave me strength and motivation.” Ejae added that she recently received an encouraging message from him. “He told me, ‘You did well. Keep working hard.’”
Before her recent success, Ejae trained for more than ten years under SM Entertainment, where she experienced setbacks but discovered her true passion for songwriting. Her credits now include major hits such as Red Velvet’s “Psycho” and several other popular tracks.
With 'KPop Demon Hunters' continuing to attract fans around the world, Ejae’s journey from trainee to global artist, inspired by her legendary grandfather, adds a touching and powerful dimension to her growing career.
