RM, leader of the global supergroup BTS, is stepping into the world of fine art as a curator for the first time — and he’s doing so on one of the biggest stages in modern art: the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA).
On October 22 KST, SFMOMA officially announced that it will host a special exhibition titled “RM × SFMOMA” from October 2026 to February 2027. This groundbreaking project marks an unprecedented collaboration between a global pop icon and one of the world’s top three modern art museums, drawing widespread attention from both the music and art communities.
The large-scale exhibition will feature approximately 200 works, combining pieces from RM’s personal art collection and SFMOMA’s holdings. With a deep, years-long passion for art, RM seeks to foster a cross-cultural dialogue between Korean modern and contemporary art and global modern art.
The exhibition will spotlight renowned Korean artists such as:
- Yun Hyong Keun,
- Park Rehyun,
- Kwon Ok Yeon,
- Kim Yoonsin,
- Do Sang Bong,
- Chang Ucchin,
and more.
Their works will be exhibited alongside masterpieces by international art legends including:
- Kim Whanki,
- Mark Rothko,
- Henri Matisse,
- Georgia O’Keeffe,
- Paul Klee.
RM explained his intent for the exhibition:
“I hope this project can become a small bridge that explores boundaries — between the classical and the modern, the East and the West — and helps us better understand one another.”
Having connected with millions through music, RM now aims to break cultural barriers through the universal language of art.
SFMOMA’s Chief Curator Janet Bishop shared her enthusiasm:
“RM’s emotionally intuitive vision and curatorial approach will allow for a fresh interpretation of art. This will open new pathways for younger generations and diverse audiences around the world to engage with contemporary art.”
RM’s interest in art is well known. He frequently visits exhibitions both in Korea and abroad and shares artwork that moves him with fans via social media, offering a glimpse into his aesthetic sensibilities. He is also widely recognized for actively collecting works by Korean modern and contemporary artists, playing a vital role in introducing Korean art to global audiences.
Unlike a simple fan collaboration or celebrity appearance, RM will act as lead curator, overseeing the entire narrative and composition of the exhibition. This marks a major expansion of his artistic identity beyond music and into curatorial storytelling.
The “RM × SFMOMA” exhibition is more than just a celebrity showcase—it represents a milestone for the globalization of Korean contemporary art. A globally influential figure spotlighting Korean art at one of the world’s premier museums offers a rare and powerful opportunity to elevate its status on the international stage.
An art industry expert noted:
“This exhibition is not just a glimpse into a celebrity’s taste, but a cultural bridge that presents the depth and value of Korean modern art to the world. It could be the catalyst that brings younger generations into museums.”
Before RM’s exhibition, SFMOMA will host two major projects by world-renowned pop artist KAWS:
- The large-scale installation “KAWS: HOLIDAY”
- A solo exhibition titled “KAWS: FAMILY”, launching in November 2025.
With back-to-back collaborations with global contemporary artists, SFMOMA is cementing its role as a platform for cultural exchange and the popularization of contemporary art.
The “RM × SFMOMA” exhibition opens in October 2026. Details regarding programs and the full exhibition schedule will be announced at a later date.
