Singer Yoo Seung Joon, also known as Steve Yoo, has drawn attention after promoting the conservative documentary ‘The Birth of Korea 2’ on social media.
On September 16 KST, Yoo shared the film’s poster via his Instagram Story, accompanied by the caption: “Distorted and twisted truths. A must see movie.”
The documentary is a sequel to last year’s right-wing film ‘The Birth of Korea’, which drew over 1.17 million viewers. The new installment delves into the Jeju April 3rd Incident, a historically sensitive topic in Korea involving state-led suppression of alleged communist sympathizers during the late 1940s.
Just days earlier, on September 13, Yoo appeared in a YouTube video where he emphasized that his efforts to enter South Korea were “not for commercial purposes.” He added, “I live with a heart full of debt, thanks to the loved ones who have stayed by my side. Even when distorted truths and twisted sincerity weigh me down, it is because of these people that I keep going.”
Yoo has remained banned from entering South Korea since 2002, when he was accused of evading mandatory military service by acquiring U.S. citizenship shortly before his scheduled enlistment. The government subsequently barred his entry under the Immigration Control Act, and he has not returned since.
