Lee Ji Ho, the eldest son of Samsung Electronics chairman Lee Jae Yong, has enlisted as a naval officer to fulfill his national defense duties.

Lee enlisted as part of the 139th class of Naval Officer Candidates and will undergo 11 weeks of officer training, after which he is scheduled to be commissioned as a Navy second lieutenant on December 1. Second lieutenant is the lowest of the three commissioned officer ranks. Including the training period and the 36-month mandatory service after commissioning, his total military service will span 39 months.

Lee Ji Ho previously made headlines when it was reported he would renounce his U.S. citizenship and enlist in the South Korean Navy.

Born in the United States in 2000, Lee held dual citizenship with Korea and the U.S., but gave up his U.S. citizenship to fulfill his military service as a naval officer. In the business world, this decision has been praised as a demonstration of "noblesse oblige."
