A representative of the Korea Music Copyright Association (KOMCA) has come forward to clarify that earlier reports of a "search and seizure operation" conducted over a copyright lawsuit involving G-Dragon, Yang Hyun Suk, and a composer 'A' are false.
According to 'Dispatch' on August 14 KST, composer 'A' is currently pursuing a lawsuit against G-Dragon, Yang Hyun Suk, and the president of YG Plus for a violation of copyright. The composer claimed that these individuals recorded and distributed their original work, the song "G-Dragon (2001)", without consent.
"G-Dragon (2001)" was previously released as a part of a hip-hop compilation album in 2001. 'A' was credited as its lyricist and composer. Then, in 2010, G-Dragon released a different version of this song as a part of a live concert album, giving it a different name, "I'm 13".
Despite its re-release in a different form with a different name, 'A' remains credited as its lyricist and composer. G-Dragon is not only not listed as a lyricist or composer, but also "received no royalties for the song," according to the KOMCA. Therefore, the KOMCA does not believe that the copyright violation lawsuit is valid.
The representative further commented, "Some news outlets reported that a search and seizure operation was conducted, but those reports are false."
Regarding the name change to "G-Dragon (2021)", YG Entertainment explained that it was to prevent confusion from another song of the same name, "G-Dragon (feat. Perry)", also released in 2001 and then re-released as a part of the live concert album.
Meanwhile, the Seoul Mapo Police is currently carrying out an investigation into the copyright violation lawsuit filed by 'A".
