Do Kyung Wan, former KBS announcer and husband of trot singer Jang Yoon Jung, has responded to fellow announcer Kim Jin Woong’s controversial remarks during a recent broadcast.
On August 26th KST, Do posted a message on his personal social media, stating, “My wife and I live with mutual respect and support, relying on each other with strength.” He also revealed that he had received an apology text from Kim.
He continued, “To some, our relationship may appear one-sided. However, we’ve always lived with deep mutual respect and care. While this incident has caused pain to our family and those who care about us, I hope no one else is hurt further because of it.”
The controversy began on KBS2’s ‘Boss in the Mirror’, when announcer Uhm Ji In named Do Kyung Wan as the colleague who married best. In response, Kim Jin Woong shook his head and remarked, “I really couldn’t live like Do Kyung Wan.”
What stirred public anger even more was his reasoning: “I couldn’t live as someone else’s ‘sub.’” The studio fell silent, and Uhm Ji In appeared visibly flustered, replying, “Why is Do Kyung Wan a sub?” Despite this, Kim emphasized, “I’m really sorry, but I don’t think I could live like that.”
After the broadcast aired, Jang Yoon Jung took to her account to express discomfort, writing, “When there is no friendship between parties, comments or actions that the other can’t laugh off should not be brushed off as ‘jokes’ or ‘playful banter.’ There is no such thing as a ‘sub’ in a family.”
Following the backlash, ‘Boss in the Mirror’ suspended its video-on-demand service for the episode in question.
Kim later issued a public apology: “I sincerely apologize to seniors Do Kyung Wan and Jang Yoon Jung for my thoughtless remarks. I acted with eagerness but lacked caution, having yet to accumulate sufficient experience. I deeply regret having said something I shouldn’t have and will remain mindful going forward.” He is also reported to have contacted the couple directly to convey his apology.
