The appeals trial for Park Soo Hong’s older brother and sister-in-law, who are charged with embezzlement, has been postponed.
On August 20th KST, the Seoul High Court Criminal Division 7 was scheduled to hold the sixth hearing in the appeals trial for Mr. Park and Ms. Lee, who were indicted for violating the Act on the Aggravated Punishment of Specific Economic Crimes (Embezzlement). However, the hearing has been postponed to September 17th.
This marks the third postponement since the appeal proceedings resumed. The fifth hearing was previously delayed from February 5th to March 5th due to an extension request for the submission of an expert advisory opinion.
Park’s brother and sister-in-law were accused of embezzling a total of 6.17 billion KRW (approx. $4.5 million) over a 10-year period from 2011 to 2021 while managing his career. In the first trial, only the embezzlement of 2 billion KRW in company funds was found to be proven. As a result, Mr. Park was sentenced to two years in prison, while Ms. Lee was acquitted.
Both sides appealed the decision. On June 13th, the defendants admitted to part of the charges related to company fund embezzlement during the appeal hearing.
Park Soo Hong previously shared in court, “It was my fault for being ignorant, but once I opened the lid on everything, it was devastating to the point I wanted to die. It’s been incredibly difficult, but I’m fighting to make things right.” He also revealed, “I had to cancel my insurance policy because I didn’t even have money for a housing deposit. When I checked my account, I only had 3.38 million KRW left.”
