Comedian Kim Shin Young is drawing attention for her candid remarks about current trends in the broadcasting industry on a recent variety show appearance.
On the July 16 episode of MBC’s variety program 'Radio Star' (Episode 923), Kim Shin Young shared updates on her life and offered a sharp critique of the state of today’s entertainment industry.
During the broadcast, Kim Shin Young mentioned, “It’s been about a year since I’ve been on my own,” sparking curiosity among viewers. Host Kim Gu Ra quickly chimed in, saying, “People assume you got divorced.”

Kim Shin Young’s comment was actually referring to her departure from her former agency. So she clarified, “It’s been a year since I became independent. I started my own company. I launched a business focused on intellectual property for my alter ego characters, and I’m currently in the process of filing patents. So far, I’ve received seven patents and registered 17 trademarks,” revealing her entrepreneurial journey.
When asked why she hasn’t been as active on TV lately, Kim took the opportunity to critique the current landscape of variety shows, saying, “These days, it feels like you have to either get married, have a kid, or get divorced to be on TV,” expressing disappointment in the industry's repetitive content trends.

Her comments sharply pointed out the current tendency of the broadcasting world to focus heavily on celebrities’ personal lives, particularly marriage, childbirth, and divorce, as major entertainment content.
When Kim Gu Ra jokingly added, “If you’re not doing any of the three, you should get into a flirtationship with someone like Ji Sang Ryul,” Kim Shin Young laughed and responded, “I’m pretty honest when it comes to love, so there’s no distance to close. That’s why I’m just focused on radio these days.”
Later, when Kim Gu Ra asked about her future, Kim Shin Young said, “A lot of my friends are married and have kids, but I want to enjoy life doing what I want on my own,” indirectly revealing her preference for a single lifestyle.
