Olympic gold medalist and swimming legend Park Tae Hwan is set to share a deeply personal story for the first time on national television. In the June 13 episode of KBS 2TV’s 'Stars’ Top Recipe at Fun-Staurant,' Park reveals the emotional struggles behind his athletic success, including his mother’s battle with cancer.
Known as Korea’s “Marine Boy,” Park achieved historic records in Korean swimming. However, behind the glory were years of relentless training and personal sacrifice. The upcoming episode will reveal the emotional support Park received from his family and the strength they gave him throughout his journey.
In a preview video, Park is seen having a heartfelt phone conversation with his older sister. She reflects on how his intense training may have cost him the chance to experience a more typical life. "You spent your life training and missed out on things most people take for granted," she says. "Now you seem much more relaxed and happy." Her words deeply moved Park, bringing him to tears.
Park shares that he endured nearly 30 years of intense training, beginning at the age of five. "I used to wake up at 4 a.m. and be in the pool by 5 a.m. That was my life for almost 30 years. It felt like there were only whips, no rewards. It was just hard," he recalls.
Despite the challenges, Park explains that his greatest source of strength was his family. "My mother went through a tough battle with cancer," he says. "Even when I felt like my heart would explode from the pain, I reminded myself that her pain was much greater. That helped me push through."
When asked about his happiest moment during his athletic career, Park does not mention his gold medals. "Of course winning felt great, but I was happiest when I was able to buy a house for my parents," he says.
Park, who became the youngest national team swimmer at just 14 years old, impressed the show’s cast with his dedication and love for his family. They praised him not only as a national hero but also as a devoted son.
In addition to his emotional revelations, the episode will feature Park showcasing his cooking skills and revealing a new menu item. Viewers can also expect to see a surprising and impressive eating performance.
