Kihyun of MONSTA X impressed viewers with his exceptional cooking skills during the latest episode of 'Study Abroad Student Anam Seon' (hereinafter referred to as 'Ryu Nam Saeng'), which aired on E Channel on June 7 KST.
Taking on the final culinary challenge of his three-day stay in Porto, Kihyun prepared a unique Korean-style spicy pork dish inspired by local Portuguese flavors. Before the cooking began, he said in an interview, “Portuguese cuisine is like a survival game—only one flavor makes it to the end.”
For his last “Ryu-style” meal abroad, Kihyun chose to cook spicy pork bulgogi, incorporating a popular Korean recipe by Ryu Soo Young that has gone viral on social media. Inspired by the Portuguese sandwich bifana he had tried earlier, he fused the dish with Korean flavors, serving it with bread.
He upgraded the recipe further by adding cream to create a rose-style sauce and even adjusted the flavor after feedback from actor Yoon Kyung Ho and the production crew, eventually adding piri-piri sauce for a final kick. The result? A dish that earned high praise from Ryu Soo-young himself.
Portuguese locals were also enthusiastic about the meal. One diner even encouraged Kihyun to “open a restaurant with this recipe.” The singer responded with a heart gesture to a local who had shown him special support, displaying his trademark warmth and charm.
Following his time in Portugal, Kihyun headed to his next destination—Brunei, dubbed the "Golden Kingdom" of Southeast Asia. On his first morning there, he sampled traditional dishes like nasi lemak, sambal hijau, and sambal belacan, offering detailed commentary and enthusiastic reactions that entertained viewers.
The episode concluded with Kihyun, Ryu Soo Young, and Yoon Kyung Ho preparing for a pop-up restaurant back in Korea, recreating and refining the dishes they had made abroad. At the event, Kihyun demonstrated professionalism and care while serving food to excited fans.
