Netflix’s reality survival series 'The Devil’s Plan: Death Room' has stirred controversy among viewers, with participants Yoon So Hee and Jeong Hyun Gyu facing a wave of criticism following the show’s finale.
The final episode, released on May 20, featured dramatic developments, including shifting alliances and a comeback by Jeong Hyun Gyu, who had been on the verge of elimination. While Yoon So Hee initially gained attention for her sharp intellect and strategic gameplay, some viewers expressed disappointment in her later performance, accusing her of making emotionally driven decisions and favoring certain contestants, which they felt diluted her competitive edge.
Critics were particularly vocal online, with comments such as, “I used to root for her, but now I’m disappointed,” and “Why did she even join a survival game show?” flooding social media platforms. Some went further, comparing her behavior to that seen on dating shows, questioning whether she had misunderstood the genre’s premise.
Despite the backlash, a portion of the audience defended Yoon So Hee, reminding others that the program is ultimately entertainment. “It’s just a show,” one comment read, while others urged netizens to refrain from personal attacks, calling out the rising tide of malicious comments.
'The Devil’s Plan: Death Room' brings together contestants from various professional backgrounds to live together for seven days while competing in complex mental and psychological challenges.
The show has previously courted controversy, most notably when Jeong Hyun Gyu made a dismissive remark toward KAIST graduate and model Choi Hyun Joon, asking, “Do you even know how to do basic math?” Facing criticism, Jeong Hyun Gyu posted a short apology “I’m sorry” on his social media bio on May 14.
As the debate continues, the series highlights not only the intensity of on-screen competition but also the scrutiny public figures face in the digital age.
