Actor Lee Seo Jin brought many netizens a mix of laughter and nostalgia as he talked about his experiences growing up in 1980's Korea, moving to the United States for the first time in middle school, etc.

On June 9 KST, Na Young Suk PD uploaded the second part of a new YouTube series he began last week, 'NaBul NaBul' (literally 'Running Mouth'). Following last week's episode, Na Young Suk PD and his crew continued to dine with their close friend, actor Lee Seo Jin, over dinner and drinks.

Here, Lee Seo Jin's childhood came up as a subject. The actor first remarked, "I wasn't a very healthy child. I caught all kinds of illnesses. Someone then told my family that I was not well-suited for the environment in Korea, that I would be healthier if I grew up overseas."

He continued, "That was in the 1980's. Around 1985. South Korea was dirt poor. Even my family, which was considered somewhat wealthy, we didn't even have luxurious dinners like this [meal in front of them]. My mother stored cans of SPAM in a locked safe in a closet. She would take one out from time to time to grill for dinner."

Lee Seo Jin argued, "This country was changed inside out after the 1988 Seoul Olympics. Before then, even the wealthiest families struggled, because the country itself was just so poor."

The actor then opened up about moving to the United States with his family some time in the late 1980's, his first time ever visiting a foreign country. "I went to the United States for the first time in my life in my first year of middle school. That was when in Korea, the students still had to warm the classrooms with a wood-burning furnace, and we took turns filling the furnace with chopped wood," Lee Seo Jin began.

"Before we got to the U.S, we made a stop in Hong Kong. It felt like I was suddenly in a sci-fi film. All those huge skyscrapers that you see in Hong Kong now, they were there in the 80's too. I can't ever forget that memory. I was so shocked," he continued.

Next, after arriving in Los Angeles, California, Lee Seo Jin was shocked by the sights he found in American grocery stores. "You went to the grocery store and the oranges were piled high like a mountain. Oranges and Delmont bananas. Piled high like mountains. Oh, and the most delicious thing ever. Pistachios. Pistachios and green grapes. I saw green grapes for the first time in the States. Fruit was so cheap and delicious in the States," he shared.

Finally, Lee Seo Jin wrapped up his trip down memory lane by mentioning, "Once my family moved back to Korea, I became obsessed with the American dream. My grades plummeted, and all I dreamt about was going back to the U.S. I only listened to pop music and watched American films." It's known that Lee Seo Jin went on to earn a Bachelor's in business at New York University.

Okay, I am so shocked by his observations of the US. I realize I take it for granted that we have it so good here. What a reality check.
