Universal Japan has reportedly filed to obtain exclusive management rights of girl group LOONA

AKP STAFF

According to an exclusive media outlet report on February 2, Universal Japan is seeking to acquire exclusive management rights of girl group LOONA. Universal Japan has been LOONA's management agency for the group's Japanese promotions since 2019.

Allegedly, in September of 2019 when the members of LOONA initially signed their Japanese management contracts, the contract stated, "Even in the case that the artists' contract with BlockBerry Creative is broken or nullified, the members must continue to fulfill their duties for this specific contract. Should they violate any terms of this contract, the artists must pay damages for failing to fulfill their responsibilities according to Japanese law."

In the case that Universal Japan decides to seek legal rights over LOONA's group management, all 12 members including the group's previously removed member Chuu may be obliged to fulfill duties outlined by their exclusive contracts for at least 3 years.

Insiders claim that Universal Japan plans on acquiring LOONA's management rights in order to have the group resume active promotions in Japan, including through album releases, fan meetings, and more.

In the past, other K-Pop girl groups have experienced cases where they continued group activities in Japan, even after halting official group activities in Korea.

Meanwhile, back on January 13, LOONA members HeeJin, Kim Lip, JinSoul, and Choerry successfully won their lawsuit against BlockBerry Creative for the nullification of their exclusive contracts. Members HaSeul, YeoJin, Yves, Olivia Hye, and Go Won, on the other hand, lost their lawsuit and remain tied to BlockBerry Creative.

Is this a good thing, or a bad thing?

So basically it's a double edged sword. If UMJ wins this, LOONA will stay as a 12 membered group, and continue to promote together except they will 100% have to promote together which means solo activities of some members' such as Chuu's will be on the back burner. Not to mention the backlash they might get in Korea for being managed by a company based in Japan. But it's definitely going to be better than staying under BBC.

Sigh, these girls can never catch a break.
