Yang Hyun Suk pops a major surprise, revealing plans for Treasure 13 to debut as one full group

Papa YG Yang Hyun Suk has dropped a major surprise for 'YG Treasure Box' fans.

On February 7, Yang Hyun Suk posted a lengthy notice via YG Life's official website, under "From YG". The producer unveiled that the top 7, winning members of 'YG Treasure Box' - known as a 7-member group Treasure up until now - and the newly selected, 6-member second group, will debut together as Treasure 13

Yang Hyun Suk explained,

"As I participated in YG Entertainment's biggest trainee survival program in history since the creation of Big Bang, WINNER, and iKON, consisting of a total of 28 trainees, my biggest regret was being unable to bring aboard so many talented individuals with potential onto such a small boat. As a result, I chose to bring along another boat, and selected a total of 13 members.

The reason that a survival program is traditional within YG is that the producer, myself, can otherwise only have one chance per month to encounter the trainees through the monthly evaluation; however, this monthly evaluation is inadequate in grasping each trainee's potential, charm, and strengths. Thus, I felt that I needed to be able to see these trainees through the eyes of fans, possible through a broadcast format. These are friends who will be here at YG for the next 10+ years after all.

I believe that to serve the perfect meal, you must get rid of overlapping dishes and create the best possible array of flavors which match well with one another. Even in soccer, teams do not play 11 strikers, and as such, the selection criteria of 'YG Treasure Box' was to choose members who would fit in each position and form a harmonized, balanced team.

This may come as a surprise to fans, but the final formation that I want in the end is a 13-member group.

To be more precise, they will first debut as a 13-member team called Treasure 13. The reason that I did not select 13 members from the get-go, instead dividing them up into two teams, is that I realized through iKON that more than 7 members means there are not enough parts for each of the members in one song, and members will only be able to sing a few short verses before they have to come off stage.

As a result, I plan to endorse Treasure 13's full group promotions, as well as the two separate teams and their separate promotions, enhancing each individual's capabilities and roles.

The biggest perk of being in the winning 7 of 'YG Treasure Box' is that the 7 have claimed the rights to the name Treasure; however, the two ships will sail toward a common goal in the end."

You can find more details on Treasure 13 including the second subunit's group name, Treasure 13's fanclub name, pre-debut reality show, plus more, here

I have mixed feelings about this- a group of that number never seems necessary. Any group w/ more than 7 members I feel like can get rid of 1 or 2 people at least.

The plus side is that instead of 5 boy groups in YG, there's only 4 and they don't have to worry about trying to carve out their own sound to set them apart from the other YG boy groups/ competing with one another.

I half agree, Seventeen has 13 members and I think they manage it very effectively. They have teams and it means that all of the members get to do something despite the size. It's the same with nct although I feel the line distribution in NCT isn't fantastic. (no shade, after all its not the boys' fault) I think you are absolutely right about the second bit though.

Well being in an idol group is about being idolized by people right ? regardless they're talented, or even just being good looking. While having more member is at a disadvantage to gain individual biases, having less members doesn't guarantee them being more stand out.

Seventeen and WJSN is one of those group that really good as a group, but only a few named indivually known.

Super Junior and Iz*one is examples of group with most of it's member being known as unique indiviual.

Mamamoo is a good example for less member more stand out. while Crayon pop failed to deliver their uniqueness despite their number.

Yes ther grand plan is to cut budgets from winner and ikon, and use the big money made by them (+bigbang+2ne1+blackpink) to support this one lmao

No disrespect but these kpop companies debuting over 9 people in a group are insane, you don't need that many people in a group. So each individual will sing acouple seconds of the song, none will get to show their real potential

I don't necessarily see that much of a bad about debuting a group with more members. Pentagon (formerly), Seventeen, WJSN, Loona, NCT, The Boyz, Golden Child, Up10tion, Super Junior, EXO (formerly) are well known groups that do well with a lot of members. SVT and NCT are one of the best groups at dancing, and we all know EXO and SUJU's vocal line. Loona released solos for all members before even debuting as a group, gaining a huge international fanbase. I think having more members can make their choreography, synchronization and teamwork stand out more.

Yes, some members may not have that many lines, but I'm sure if the company is good at promoting, they will give more chances for unit and individual promotions. For example, we see Seventeen, EXO, NCT and Suju releasing songs as units. These unit songs will give the members more spotlight to show their real potential (happens for most, SM needs to pick up their game and give Winwin lines).

Yeaah but having 11 boys and debuting 13 more in a short span of time isn't that good. Super junior to exo was fine, but exo to nct shift doesnt work well as you see nct failed to gain what exo does in their early years

so basically , the winning 7 is like B.I and Bobby, and the remaining 6 are like the rest of the ikon members

Your one sentence makes so much more sense than YG's whole article/answer.

Yg did all this bullshit to just say that he's gonna debut a 13 member group in the end. It's what I originally wanted but I don't want it anymore & he can't even take care of a group of 7 so how is he going to manage 13

Imo it says a lot about YG...

On one side it shows how much YG pursue trends instead of creating them now, that new group just seems like any other group, there isnt that specific YG brand to it;

On the other side it shows that he knows how to adapt to the market; and that he let go of that "create Big Bang 2.0" obsession for now and tries something else.

Mino bi and bobby definitely give yg vibe, but honestly their group songs only got worse since their debut. For me, ikon and winner debut songs are the best from their discography

He should’ve done this with Winner and IKON, during WIN instead. There was so much hype around their friendship and they had all trained together for years. Whereas although the treasure trainees are close, the Japanese trainees only met the Korean ones whilst filming for the show. I also don’t understand why he didn’t just debut all of Treasure A considering how all of them were debut ready and that there are 13 spaces available. A lot of the members are questionable choices, and he seems to have 4/5 trainees who fill the visual role without the experience to back up their talent. I would feel so hard done by if I were Byonggon, Seunghun and even Keita who trained for years and proved their talent on the show

As if you will be able to handle a 13 member group....Not to mention winner debuted as 5 and couldn't handle and now 4.

realized through iKON that more than 7 members means there are not enough parts for each of the members in one song,

not enough part because that damn BI and Bobby got almost the part in their song. IKon is just like Bobby&BI featuring others. *rolls eyes* I wonder how fair this group will get their line distribution...

SEVENTEEN WITH 13 MEMBERS DISTRIBUTE THEIR LINE PROPERLY AND ALL THE MEMBER GET ENOUGH SCREEN TIME.. IF THE MEMBER DID NOT HAVE MANY LINE TO SING, THEY WILL BE IN FRONT DURING DANCE AND CAMERA ALWAYS PERFECTLY CAPTURE EVERY SINGLE OF SEVENTEEN MEMBERS.

meanwhile, IKon with JUST 7 members yet all the screen time is on Bobby and BI. The f.. is this..

only yg dumb *** thinks wanna one and ioi were successful survival show groups because of the numbers. NO DUMMY ITS TGE PROMO!! You had ikon and winner and f*** it up. Treasure box can have 13 members but If you’re still promoting like you do the results are gonna be the same stupid.

at least he let go of wanting a second BB group. I think its a good idea to start with and so many trainees got the chance to debut and shine. The future will show if it works or not. People will hate no matter how he decides so whatever. You never know till you try.

"The biggest perk of being in the winning 7 of 'YG Treasure Box' is that the 7 have claimed the rights to the name Treasure;"... uhhhh big deal???

How is that even a perk for the boys YG??

Not really a perk if being there just only to be called "yedam+hyunsuk and the others"

Exactly its so obvious it will be very focused on the duo! Even the name Treasure doesn't sound the least bit cool for them to even be happy about. Unless they receive additional benefits then at least that is something

Nooo dude, naming a group after the number of members is one of the worst choices you can make. Because it might stop being a 13 member group in the future.

am i the only one who thinks this explanation ISN'T unclear? basically two groups that sometimes promote together or one group that sometimes promotes at two subunits. the only thing the first seven boys got was that they get to have their group name be "treasure" lmao

wonder if all the male trainees were dropped from yg or, if not, whether most of them will leave. i mean there clearly isn't much of an opportunity for them to debut in the next 5-10 years, really...

(I know that Byunggon/Seunghoon left YGE not sure about Keita tho.. He would have been a great addition..)

Big ol' surprise... not.

I hope he doesn't change his mind again and actually debut them... feel bad for the ones who were in final 13 but didn't get chosen. Now he wants to debut 13 as a whole.

all of this will turn to nothing since they r only promotes in a few station tv like inkigayo n mbc..the reason why exo n seventeen worked to be popular, is bcoz they r gettin promotes everywhere..i bet they will only have 1 song per year for full groups n the rest will be mini units n soloist comeback which makes it looks more mess than before..anyway i am not yg stan so dont really care how it turned out..

Lol YG. The only way this could be funnier to me is if the second group plays on 'Box' in their name somehow.

Big groups with units are really trendy at the moment though and it's a much better way to debut a whole bunch of trainees at once rather than having them be seen as competition for one another.

and once again, ryenlux, you can stop trying so hard to seem like an army, youre a jealous racist piece of shit who hates kpop since many years. youre acting like an army with stopudelulu, while youre using your other hater accounts like kpoptrashtalker, holdthisLnoobs, fatndumb to hate on bts, you even wished them bad things to happen with your holdthisLnoobs account, which i proved with a link to your comment, that everyone could see...

and you seriously believe, you can act nice as ryenlux, just for some likes, while more and more people already know that youre behind these accounts, which is why you even started to harass them over private messages in hope to shut them up...
