FT Island member Hongki has revealed that he has been living with a rare skin condition called hidradenitis suppurativa for nearly two decades.
His quiet perseverance through multiple surgeries and the resulting impact on daily life drew deep sympathy from viewers.
On the June 15 episode of the SBS variety show 'My Little Old Boy', Hongki visited a hospital for a health checkup. “Lately, I’ve been feeling a familiar sensation near my armpit,” he shared. “I also wanted to get my buttocks checked, so I came to the hospital.”
Hidradenitis suppurativa is a rare chronic disorder that causes painful, pus-filled lumps in areas with sweat glands, such as the armpits and buttocks. The disease often leads to recurring abscesses and inflammation, severely impacting daily life. In advanced stages, abscesses can rupture or develop into interconnected tunnels under the skin.
“I’ve suffered from boils since I was young and have undergone eight surgeries,” Lee confessed. “Because of the surgical scars, I avoid going to public bathhouses.” He recalled a particularly distressing memory from middle school when a boil burst during class, soaking his school uniform with blood and pus. “At the time, I didn’t even think about going to the hospital—I just went home early.”

According to his doctor, Hongki once visited the hospital with a boil as large as his palm, which required urgent drainage. Recent tests also showed signs of a new boil developing under his arm, underscoring the need for continued treatment. The doctor added that his condition may improve in his 40s, when male hormone levels typically decline.
With upcoming festival appearances and performances, Hongki said he’s paying extra attention to his health. “This isn’t just a simple skin issue—it’s a disease that disrupts your entire life,” he stressed. “Catching it early is crucial.”
Hongki also underwent a review of his lifestyle habits. His diet—high in greasy takeout, alcohol, and e-cigarettes—was flagged as a contributing factor. The medical team strongly recommended lifestyle changes to help manage the condition.
