Hwang Chi Yeol receives backlash for comments on China's air quality

Hwang Chi Yeol is receiving backlash for his comments about China's air quality on the January 23rd episode of 'Radio Star'.

The singer is known for his popularity with Chinese fans, but he's been getting heat from Chinese netizens after his appearance on 'Radio Star'. Hwang Chi Yeol previously stated, "When I arrived at the airport in China, I couldn't see in front of me. It made me think how bad the air quality is, and after drinking water, I felt that the water tasted different too." He added, "Those things don't matter to me."

However, he's now climbed to #1 on Chinese social media site Weibo for his comments, and netizens in the country commented, "I guess he's made all the money he can in China," "China doesn't welcome you," and more.

Stay tuned for updates on Hwang Chi Yeol.

But........the air quality is poor in China? I've friends who've worked and currently work there, and it's a serious issue in the larger cities. I know people that actually had to leave work that they enjoyed because the air quality either gave them health issues, or exacerbated ones they already had. It's not like it's a secret, there have been numerous reports over the decades of the growing issues with air quality in China. They can't sit there and get offended by an issue that's so blatantly obvious.

But to be fair the air quality in China has improved so much in recent years compared to 10 years ago. If you ever been to China back then and now, there's a dramatic difference. And it's not like their government is doing nothing either. China also recently banned the import of waste from other countries since they used to import 2/3 of the world's recycling waste. You can imagine the kind of pollution caused by the factories that processed million and millions of metric tonnes of paper, plastic and other junk collected from other countries.

Korean shows talk about their country's fine dust issue all the time. China isn't the only country with air quality issues and it's not like it's a secret. Also, water in every country tastes different for all sorts of reasons. Just people being oversensitive.

the fine dust comes from China and at times get worse because of certain wind directions. Do you really think a population of 50 million can produce that much dust

Koreans blame their fine dust issues on China because the winds carry over their pollution and mixes with their own, multiplying the effect. Also, although the Korean economy likes Chinese money there are a lot of unfair negative stereotypes of the Chinese in Korea, i.e rude, dirty, loud, inconsiderate, spoiled etc. I think the Chinese are also aware of these stereotypes so it bothers them that a Korean celebrity can view them negatively but are eager for their money.

Don't be ignorant. Japanese people love Korean money yet they talk shit about us all the time, yet do you see Koreans going on nation wide attack campaigns? No, because Koreans aren't brainwashed by a single party system and overtly nationalistic like the Chinese. There was a guy on reddit and he was talking in a group chat with a bunch of Chinese exchange students in Korea. One Korean guy brought up the bad air quality in China and all the girls started attacking him. I've heard stories like this many times, why are Chinese people so defensive? I mean I'm Korean, I would know a thing or two about salty netizens but Chinese take things to the next level. Do you not realize that stereotypes have some sort of basis on truth? Maybe you should wake up and realize all the shit you're spouting is because of a cultural revolution gone wrong.

Chinese people are heavily indoctrinated into believing they are amazing and nobody must say anything mildly controversial. Although I fail to see how it's controversial to point out the obvious. For one, aren't there a ton of posts every once in a while of Chinese netizens criticizing Jackie Chan for saying Hong Kong has an amazingly blue and clear sky? Regardless of their uptight and dumb nature — the Chinese are aware of their situation, so I can see why they'd get mad at a foreign singer who's constantly promoting in their country.
On another note though it's even more dumb for them to bring it up in the first place because the matter will only grow bigger and more people will read the words "bad air quality in China". It would be best if they hadn't brought this up at all; since apparently they are THAT sensitive about China's image.

It's not just Chinese people, it's called nationalism and Americans, Japanese, Germans, and even Koreans are guilty of it. This coming from a Korean person. It's ironic to see you criticizing the Chinese for being elitists/nationalists when you generalize them as a whole and talk like you are above them,

But Chinese nationalists/hegemony are extremely cancerous and state funded even.

I have been many times to China for work and boy is not wrong. Air quality is really bad over there, there is so much smog.

Once when I was in beijing, I saw this grey particles falling from the sky as if it was snowing. Not sure if it was ash or what, but it made me stay the whole trip inside the hotel.

society today, talking about truth and then you got backlash, the whole world already knew how bad the air quality in China, and I think there was a man before turning on a vacuum cleaner for around 2 days and collected the air to proof the bad air quality in China, and the result was you could made a brick from the dust

But China's air quality really can be bad.... He's not lying. In bigger cities it does get smoggy, so if he landed in bigger airports like in Beijing than yes he's speaking the truth. My asthma always acts up when I'm in Beijing. The air quality does get better in smaller towns though, so I recommend visiting lesser known cities. They're beautiful.

Chinese has a saying: "Dont bite the hands that feeds you."

He may be trying the truth but if he is also earning Chinese money, there are some things one cannot comment so openly. Anyway, he is a media personal, he knows if his comment has affected his career in China. In due time, I expect he will release a apology statements. He got to be No1 Topic of the day in China, that is no easy feat. That is actually good marketing on his part too.I bet he will get new fans as many in China agrees with him. I knows a number of my own friends do....

He may a bit dramatic on the issue but he did not lie. Northern China especially Beijing and surrounding area air quality is pretty bad. Is Chinese netizen thinks HCY lying or are they ashamed HCY telling the truth? The whole world knows Beijing smog problem.

The people criticizing him for commenting on China's bad air quality are probably those who barricade themselves in their homes and have an air purifier in every corner.
