Reporter responds to accusations of racist remark towards Soo Hyun (Claudia Kim) in 'Fantastic Beasts 2' interview

Reporter Kjersti Flaa responded to accusations she made a rude and allegedly racist remark towards 'Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald' actress Claudia Kim (Soo Hyun).

On November 7, Kjersti Flaa posted an interview with 'Fantastic Beasts' stars Ezra Miller and Claudia Kim, but some viewers and fans were upset by one of her statements. The reporter asked about the two actors' first experience with the book series, and Soo Hyun responded, "Middle school, Korea. I asked my Dad's friend to get me the book from the US."

The reporter then responded in surprise, "Ooh, but you read it in English, then? So you did speak English? That's cool." The statement made for an awkward moment, and Ezra Miller spoke up, saying, "She still does even now speak English. Very well." Her apparent surprise and assumption on the actress' English language skills have caused some backlash.

Kjersti Flaa has now posted on Instagram, expressing her thoughts on her allegedly racist remark. She posted to Instagram, "Since I posted my interview with her and Ezra Miller I have realized that something I asked her came off in a way that was never intentionally meant as being anything else but curiosity, but it has later been brought to my attention that it sounded ignorant... I have received a lot of emails with extremely unpleasant threats to me and my family after several sources are calling me racist and other terrible things. I have been totally heart broken by everything that has happened. All I wanted to do was make a great interview with her and Ezra and I am sorry to everyone that was disappointed. Now, please spread some love into this world instead of fueling it with more hatred. And if you read this Claudia, please forgive me if I offended you."

This is @claudiashkim who I had the pleasure to meet and interview last week for the Fantastic Beasts 2 movie. Since I posted my interview with her and Ezra Miller I have realized that something I asked her came off in a way that was never intentionally meant as being anything else but curiosity, but it has later been brought to my attention that it sounded ignorant. I am a Norwegian myself and English is not my first language and I was really impressed that Claudia could read Harry Potter in English at a very young age (since she grew up in Korea and I know that English is not her first language). And if you read this Claudia, please forgive me if I offended you. ❤

Pple are really just trying hard to be offended. Claudia grew up in a non-english speaking country, so its not an offensive question, its basically 'wow its cool u know two languages at a young age'

I'd be surprised/amazed too if someone who grew up in UK or other english countries read/understood french novels at a young age.

p.s: wont be surprised if these are the same pple that get pissed & say koreans shouldn't be expected to know english well, when reporters say kpop stars english is bad (i still think those reporters are rude.)

allkpop... might i just say that i LOVE that you guys have gone back to having to sign in for comments. i know this cuts down on your interaction and all but this makes for such a nicer kpop community since people can't just anonymously come on here and type up a bunch of angry, fanwar garbage. thank you for making a step to make your site better and less trashy! this is a big help in weeding out all those comments.

Isn't it a normal question? She was just impressed that she was bilingual at that age, that's normal

It is an impressive feat for her to have learned and read the book at that age. Many kids in Korea certainly couldn't. The reporter had every right to be a bit surprised.

That was a gracious apology for a stupid fucking reason. Surely it was a good reason to send the woman and her family threats.

KJERSTI FLAA proved that her 'Interview Preparation' work is NOT of good quality. This seems to be NOT uncommon with USA News 'On Camera' Employees. But, I do NOT think that KJERSTI FLAA intended anything 'racial' in what happened. And a LOT of the 'hate messaging' that KF is now getting it, is from those who HATE the USA in general, or say TRUMP in particular. Or just general TROLLING activity.

http://kjerstiflaa.com/
KJERSTI FLAA is a NORWAY citizen ; and likely NOT a USA citizen.
She has been doing USA (New York) based TV Media work since Year 2007.

https://www.allkpop.com/article/2018/02/nbc-fires-olympic-analyst-who-made-insensitive-remarks-during-pyeongchang-olympics-2018-opening-ceremony

NBC-TV did fire (Feb. 2018) their Olympic analyst, Joshua Cooper Ramo (STARBUCKS Coffee ; Board Member) for saying -->
"Every Korean will tell you that Japan as a cultural, and technological, and economic example, has been so important to their own transformation" <--
Which, came across to *some* actual S.KOREANS as that S.K 'owed' JAPAN for ALL that they are in life ... ;)
And now, 6 months later, S.KOREANS do CONTINUE to drink STARBUCKS Coffee ... ;)
And Joshua Cooper Ramo (guessing) is STILL a STARBUCKS Coffee 'Board of Directors' member ... ;)
Hopefully, this puts into perspective the 'tremendous offense' of KJERSTI FLAA ... ;)

stupid asshole Yankee !!! It's how your mother taught you how to treat a beautiful woman? But again I am not surprised, Yankees are racist, savage, uneducated, pervert ( like their pussy grabber president Donald Duck). They give lesson of moral and human right to other country but in their own country, every minute a woman is raped and mass killing.......Just tonight my father watching KBS news and Yankees killed each other 12 deaths so far !!! So racist, savage Yankees stop giving us lessons, You are not better than other race but maybe the worst !!!

well first of all, since you obviously didn't read... the person doing the interview was a WOMAN. second, she is from norway. third, for someone who rants about racism and what not... you are the MOST aggressive, racist person ive ever seen. without fail, i see you ranting about racist, perverted "yankees" all the time on here. it truly sounds both scary and insane. i don't know where you are from but it's obvious you are swallowing whatever lies your own country and the media gives you. you need to calm down and stop.

It depends what is common sense for you? Hurting the feeling of a pretty girl is common sens for you? Obviously you are not using the same dictionary than me. Educate yourself !
