Experts give mixed reactions on E'Dawn's potential as a solo artist

Pentagon, E
E'Dawn is now officially a free agent. The idol is no longer an artist under Cube Entertainment or a member of Pentagon. Without the agency or the group, many assume E'Dawn will be starting fresh as a solo artist in the future. But would solo E'Dawn see any success? Experts shared their opinions on his potential as a solo artist.

[SEEALSO]https://www.allkpop.com/article/2018/11/pentagons-edawn-confirmed-to-part-ways-with-cube-entertainment[/SEEALSO]

In an interview with Sports Seoul, one expert in the K-pop industry spoke positively on E'Dawn's future. The expert stated, "E'Dawn was the main rapper of Pentagon. His rap skills are not bad for an idol and his performance skills in Pentagon was at the top. His songwriting skills are also not bad. He still has a lot to show."

Another expert stated, "I think he'll need some time to promote as a solo artist or in another group. He also needs an opportunity to gather his separated fandom. It won't be easy for him to fly as an artist if he isn't given a restarting turning point or a chance such as an audition program, variety show, etc. It's also important for him to find an agency or a supporter that can aid him."

There are some who saw darkness in E'Dawn's future. A third expert stated, "First of all, it won't be easy for him to find an agency to work with. There are some in the public that supports him, but from an agency's point of view, he committed a detrimental act for his former label. It won't be easy to decide to work with him."

The expert also said, "With his public relationship with HyunA, E'Dawn lost his fans but gained the public. His recently launched Instagram account has already exceeded 616K followers due to HyunA's active sharing. However, they are not loyal fans of E'Dawn. As of now, his fandom seems to be more in Japan and overseas. It won't be easy for him to immediately plan something domestically."

What are your thoughts on E'Dawn's future?

He'll be fine - just like Hyuna. They're both very talented, I hope they find a good new entertainment company that supports them.

Hyuna is not a nobody, she must've made a lot of friends and connections who'll be willing to help them out. And even if it doesn't go too well, he's a good composer and he still has supportive (sane) fans who don't have any delusional fantasies about getting into his pants.

Since his career just started (unlike Hyuna's) he will probably have a tough time. Think about how talented the members of 2NE1 were and Minzy signed with a terrible label and Park Bom just got signed. Fan girls are different than fan boys. Fan girls like to think they can date their idol and thus spend a lot of money on that fantasy. Fan boys don't care of their faves date most of the time, even if they fantasize dating them. Hyuna was in the industry longer and able to build her fandom over time, so her fandom became loyal due to the length of time she was in the industry and she was successful. A new almost rookie idol, who's group only really had one or two good songs that fandom turned on him fast. They started canceling tickets to concerts and fan meets. It wasn't just Cube being jerks about them dating, they were losing money because the fans were angry. Which means that most labels won't take that much of a chance with him. A larger agency wouldn't need him since they have their own stars. A small agency might not take the risk of losing money, that they don't have and he can be a PR nightmare. Even Cube didn't know what to do when those angry fans went after them returning over half of the tickets to their fan meet and canceling concert tickets. Right now yes he has people on his Instagram, everyone loves a good show, but will they buy albums??? Will they support him when he signs somewhere else? Those are questions that an agency might not want to try. It would be better to start a new agency, because most agencies would have gotten rid of their idols that dated when they had a dating ban. He broke a golden rule in Kpop and agencies might go hey good for you, but might not give him a contract either. He can't be marketed as the perfect boyfriend if he already has a girlfriend.

Everyone is assuming he won't be a idol anymore so most of the the things you are worried about won't apply, he is making music for the public and not escapism for a youth culture. You know there are other music careers besides idols, even in pop, in Korea? He has the potential and the public eye is on him, a non idol company and the general public won't care if he is dating, he just needs to reinvent himself as a solo non idol pop singer or non idol rapper and see if there is a demographic that wants him. Jay Park, Lee Hyori and Zico are prime examples of people whose idol career ended or while being a idol transitioned out of the idol box to be respected general public soloist.

In terms of Minzy she signed to Music Works, a sublabel of CJ&E, which isn't a bad organization to be apart of. But they mismanaged her (still are) and gave her the wrong songs. If she can she should go to Stone Music, they have some of the best soloist in S.Korea like Heize, Roy Kim, and Eric Nam, and use to manage Lee Hyori.

Unpopular opinion: He won't be successful. Realistically people in Korea don't know him and with the current trend of the next hit continually being produced every few weeks, he won't be able to stay relevant long term. Female solo artists have been far more successful than solo artists. Also, E-Dawn never really had the boyfriend image and whatever he had is lost. He should stick to being a producer and do what Gray does: Feature on a lot of songs and get tons of royalties.

He isn't going to be a idol so he won't be selling himself as a boyfriend escapism fantasy, the idol is just one music career in S.K. that most Koreans don't even care about anyway. He clearly is done with the idol life so I don't know why peoeple keep bringing up his single marketability because it doesn't really matter anymore.

I think he will have a hard time doing anything in Korea because netizens won't let him forget about the 'betrayal'. I think he will be fine, if he can't promote domestically then go to Japan and have a successful career. He is a composer if he doesn't want to perform anymore then composing will definitely keep him active in the music industry not just locally but he can expand overseas. I think his future is bright it may take him a while to jump start his career again but it's not like it's impossible. He can also decide not to pursue music at all and go in another direction that wont be so restrictive to him like acting right now his life is a world of possibilities not hopelessness as some would like to believe.

I think he can start a new Troublemaker with Hyuna first instead of debuting as a solo right away. Im sorry but he needs Hyuna popularity right now to gain recognition. He just started to get recognised when Pentagon's Shine was charted well but doesn't mean he's already popular. I know he got talents, was a main rapper in Pentagon but there are so many better idol rappers out there and his path is quite heavy to make himself to be on top list. Well, he can try and we dont know where fate's gonna take him but as far as i know, to achieve success you always need a stepping stone.

If it wasn't for Hyuna's bf, do you think people will know who edawn is? They barely recognised him in the first place. They know edawn now bcs he's entitled as Hyuna's bf. People even barely know Pentagon tbh. They only started to gain recognition tho.

I think he'll be fine so long as "becoming popular" is not a concern of his. I would suggest he do underground music, work as a producer, maybe get into a little dj-ing, and build himself up from scratch.

Like a lot of people said, he definitely has the potentials to be a good solo artist. The problem is restarting. On paper, him and Hyuna went behind agency’s back, revealed thier relationship to the public, and got kicked out for that. That’s not exactly somthing you want on your resume. So it would make that hard for any bigger named agencies to take him in. But I could kind of see a small agency taking him in and redebuting him in an idol group because he is a known name it would bring attention to a new group. But I think he’s better off redebuting as a soloist rather than another idol group. Worst case scenario, he could at least work behind the scenes as a producer but I would much rather see him on stage.

I'm just wondering how he'll feel if their relationship doesn't last long. I'm not saying it will or it won't, but this is not just about his love life, but also his future. Love won't pay your living expenses, so I hope he made the right decision...

That's how I feel as well. Hyuna was in the industry for a long time, she had loyal fans. He didn't have the time to build a stable fan base. Those fans turned on him fast and canceled concert tickets and showed just how angry they were. K-fans are different than I-fans. My group had a large amount of I-fans but because they didn't have K-fans they didn't win at award shows; they didn't get music show wins; and they charted really low on Korean charts. They almost disbanded and they finally got K-fans and are having success. You need K-fans to stay on top in this industry. But K-fans don't like their idols dating. So unless he gets really popular in the international market his career might have be over. Most agencies won't sign someone with scandals in Korea, especially not breaking a golden rule of Kpop and dating when he was a rookie and probably under a dating ban. If they break up with all this has costed him, it would be sad. He might even become resentful to her because if he can't regroup and get another contract to follow his dreams what would he feel like? Will he be happy just being Hyuna's boyfriend, if he can't be an idol? How would he take it if he can only become an idol again by riding Hyuna's fame? I wish him the best and hope that things work out for him.

Yup and he's really talented and loves to be involved in the process of making music. Maybe he can become a producer idk... However, they all should have dealt with this in a different manner. Korean fans don't like when idols date, but if you have a fanbase and are successful it'll be easier to deal with it. I'm afraid that he's the one who is in the worst position in this whole situation...

All along it's been my suspicion that Hyuna pushed him for some declaration or commitment. Think about how they came out. Fans were critical of her hanging all over him all the time during the trios' performances and photo shoots. Their complaint was about too much "skinship."

I don't think he will have a hard time. He won't have that much fans but he will have the public attention, and I think that's what he prefers. Plus if he fails as an artist he can always be a producer. He doesn't have to be on the stage to be successful.

The one person is right, he gained the public but lost his fans and companies may be hesitant to work with him because he appears to strong willed. Companies in general, whatever in Korea, pop or not, don't like too strong willed people but the ones that offer or take him will probably be more sincere. Having a small fandom but public support yet companies on needles about you is a interesting situation to be in.

tbh i never really liked his rap. I can't listen to high pitch female or male rappers for some reason. It was one of the reasons why I always avoided listening to Pentagon. I sorta wonder if it's the whole the older you are the more high pitch sounds can get on your nerves. I can't really even think of a high pitch male rapper going solo and being successful in the past.

I don't buy the "betrayal act" reason for a second, agency are only out to make money, they will sign you if you are still marketable, just look at Hyuna. But I don't really see a bright prospect for E'dawn in the near future, he can't be an idol anymore as idols mainly sell on fantasies and he lost that, so the best hope for him is to compose a few major hits and hopefully big successful groups use them, however this will need him to be super talented.

I just want to clarify the air for ignorant children who don't listen and only see. No one had a problem with them dating, there is nothing wrong with dating. The problem was they LIED and HID for TWO YEARS in a Company that WOULD SUPPORT THEN and HAS NO DATING BAN. There was no reason to lie and then when the company tried to defend them (since they had no idea they were dating) they made Cube a laughing stock. I don't agree with some actions Cube made, but I'm still on Cube's side. Hyuna and Hyojong are two grown adults, they should have known better. You cannot tell anyone that they didn't know the outcome of their actions. That's like cheating on a chest, getting away with it and when someone tries to expose you and your teacher defends you for 'not cheating' you're like "lol yeah I cheated". On top of then, not expect to get punished. Well obviously since you cheated. Anyways, they lied and hid then made Cube a laughing stock and wondered why there was a problem? Seriously. Please act like the adults you are. The problem was the lying and not caring, not the dating. Now if anyone did have a problem with the dating then that's just sad, there's nothing wrong with dating. Also I didn't appreciate the fact they didn't care, they stayed quiet and just let the fire fule, they didn't even care about Pentagon's anniversary honestly. They decided to upload OLD PHOTOS, not even new photos of their date in japan on Pentagon's anniversary, they clearly knew and they knew the outcome of what would happen. They have common sense and are adults, especially since Hyojong was a member. I support them dating, but I don't support them and their actions. Honestly speaking, I never liked Hyuna (and definitely never will), even in her JYP days.. but I still support their health and their dating. Though if they end up breaking up I hope they know it'll be a disaster. They basically crashed, not ruined, their careers just for dating, which is sad. Dating isn't that big of a deal. What I mean by crashed is leaving a permanent mark and literally no one will forget this and remember this.. but they aren't ruined, they are still successful. I just wish people would think and read before speaking and attacking Cube. You attack Cube when you only know there was a dating news breakout and fighting. If Cube was that bad, literally no one would be there. Cube is far from being the worst company, want to know the worst company? TS and DSP. Also Star Empire is catching up.

This should never never been a problem, but it all became one solely cause they lied and hid for 2 straight years. Not even 4 months, it was 2 YEARS.

Yeah... Wait, what was it again with Beast/B2ST (known as Highlight nowadays)? Oh, right... They left Cube to establish their own label, but they couldn't use their old name legally because it was trademarked by Cube until 2026. Plus, Cube once announced that Beast will be reformed with former member Jang Hyunseung + 2 new members - which later turned out to be a lie.

What a great company.

Come back (both of you) when you learn how to use grammar and speak properly. LOL I never said Cube wasn't shitty or didn't do dumb shit, I CLEARLY STATED Cube isn't the worst and aren't THAT bad. Learn to read. Do you see any other artist leaving or having problems like this? No. This was the first time in Cube's history they had a problem like this. Why? It's stated in my comment and most people's comments (not talking about Akp if you don't understand references and context clues). Also idk why you said "known as highlight nowadays" as if no one knows who BEAST and Highlight are lmao. Also did you know why they left? Or only know they left? You need to do your research before commenting irrelevant comments to try to prove a point. Their situation is completely different, just because they were in the same company doesn't mean anything. That's like comparing a banana with a kiwi solely cause they are fruits, no, they are two different fruits. These are two different situations.

I think his best bet is to do a reality audition program. That way (unless there's MNET style editing that is pushed on him from the beginning, which with CUBE who knows what lengths they would go since they already have proved how messy & petty they are) everyone will be able to not only get to know him, but he can showcase his talents. Even the best people on these trainee programs have ups & downs & maybe these disgusting anti fans will get some pleasure in seeing him work hard & struggle & be satisfied while the rest of the viewers will be able to see his talent, personality, & decide for themselves if they like him or want to support him. Because it's not like he's untalented or doesn't have charisma. He's got it all even as a person who barely knew about him besides Shine. Like it's obvious to even someone like me. I think that way he will be able to get his name out there, showcase his talents & abilities, & be able to separate himself from Hyuna/this "controversy's" shadow a bit. Also if an agency doesn't want to take him due to his "dating" - that's the most ridiculous thing in the world. I know this probably won't happen but it would be interesting to see him with AOMG or an offshoot company from YG.

I pretty much agree, he is kinda screwed. No matter what all y'all righteous dumbos say, most support comes from crazy fans that think they can own you. This one ain't gonna happen here, he also backstabbed his agency which resulted in them losing a lot of money in the process. Let's face it, he isn't a star; he definitely needs some boost as mentioned on the article. Lastly all of you from abroad are all words but when these people drop new music, you all just stream the video on youtube without buying sh1t.
His other alternative now that the public is kinda keeping an eye on him? Drop an absolute banger.. I highly doubt that's gonna happen.

In some ways I agree with you. Without a Korean home base it's hard to win awards (which are controlled by Korean music and award shows). It's hard to break through in other countries. Someone mentioned Japan, but only a few groups are even popular in Japan. The Kpop sections even in Koreantown in Japan are very small, and only have a few artists. When I travel to Japan to shop, even Wanna One wasn't really popular, their albums were in the clearance section. The only artists that had albums on the shelves were Big Bang; Shinee; JYJ; Nu'est, Seventeen; and I really didn't even see many others. But those groups (except Seventeen) have Japanese albums and songs in Japanese and English. He isn't popular in Japan and you just can't break into that market you need an agency to back you up. It's almost impossible to break into the American market. I'm American and I'm older - ALMOST every American takes music offline. My friends think I'm crazy for buying physical albums. In America we really don't even have CD/DVD players. Our computers no longer have that option unless you pay for it. Our cars don't have them since you can now use your IPod or IPhone or MP3 player directly in the car. Most of America is digital and they just steal the songs offline or the videos. They really don't pay for things like physical albums. Physical album sales are important to Kpop idols. It's going to be hard because it was the K-fans that turned their back on him demanding their money back and canceling tickets. If they think he can just walk somewhere and become famous, when the only reason Shine got attention was because of the scandal. They weren't all that popular as a group, but that is because they were new. Any agency might not be willing to take someone with an active scandal no matter how talented they are. Kpop has a lot of talented underrated groups that go nowhere. Talent isn't the only factor for being popular in Kpop. I don't even know if he knows English or Japanese, so breaking into those markets and all you sing in is Korean is also problematic.

Seventeen does have a Japanese Album. And around the world is almost the same about music. I don't get why americans think they have to explain to other people how they live in USA, like we, as "foreigners", don't have those things in our countries. You don't have to "make it" in America, to make it in the kpop industry. And that's the subject of this publication. I get that the United States is probably the most important country in the world but that doesn't make you to decide if an artist is important or not. That doesn't mean that other countries need to know what makes you tick (and to "you" i mean americans) so you can be happy. You are a clear example of Americentrism, and if you don't know what that means, just google it. The kpop industry (and their artist) survive a lot of time, without the USA... So that still can happen.
