Kris talks about how he treasures his EXO days + lack of freedom as a K-pop idol

Kris opened up about his past as a K-pop idol.

On October 28, djvlad released a video interview with Kris. The Chinese star had an honest chat, where he talked about his family, start as a member of EXO and more.

When asked about the highlight of his EXO days, Kris replied, "I definitely appreciate all the stuff. There were good times, and there were hard times, but I treasure every moment. I feel like without that; I would never be who I am today. So it's just a part of my life that I take with me."

He also opened up about the hardships of being a K-pop idol. Kris said, "One of the biggest problems I had... obviously, first of all, the schedules are super intense. I had no freedom whatsoever. The thing that bothers me the most is that I had no freedom creatively, so I couldn't do the type of music I wanted to do."

You can watch the full interview in the clip above.

The thing that bothers me the most is that I had no freedom creatively, so I couldn't do the type of music I wanted to do.

well, thats something that was well known beforehand and you knew what you were signing up for when you accepted.

i find it a bit weird you would use that as though its something that was a secret or something.

You've never taken a job believing you'd get a promotion?

you mean, like going from a trainee to a top kpop idol.

what he is doing is not complaining about a promotion, he is complaining about the hard work he had to do in a job where it is well known that hard work is part of the course.

if you want artistic freedom, thats fine, but dont expect it within the first couple years of being an idol, when there is enough precedent that indicates that doesnt happen.

what he did had more to do with getting his name out there and then branching out, cause it pays more, which is fine(although i feel its not 100% ethical), but dont pretend he couldnt have known what the kpop industry was like after spending years as a trainee in korea.

Dude thats something you knew before you signed that contract, you shouldnt have signed something you were not sure about in the first place. "I definitely appreciate all the stuff. There were good times, and there were hard times, but I treasure every moment." One thing that makes me mad is watching exo on some variety shows, everyone doing their best and then there was Kris with an apathetic face giving a shit about the show, ive never seen any other idol ever acting like that.

Even when GOT7 were not good at Korea...they still had rap lines and part in their song...I watched EXO old videos and I could barely find Kris having a line and he was suppose to be d lead rapper.

People cannot keep complaining about the same agency and you think he should have known what he was signing up for. Sometimes you don’t no. As a stylist that is working in the entertainment industry, there’s ALOT going on in the industry that you don’t no.

it thanks to exo-growl he become popular and can comeback to mainland as famoud star

He isn't a hypocrite. He wanted to be an idol but was forced to not compose. It isn't his fault. Besides, not many people would have listened to him if he was an indie rapper from the start. And you should learn to spell.

But think about it, he was 18 when he got scouted, he didn't even know what to be, what to pursue, so what makes you think he should've been an indie rapper? It wasn't until he entered SM, was taught how to rap and do music that he realized what he wanted to pursue, and at that time he was already in Exo and it was too late to turn back. You're just making Armys seem bad now.

So, SM fulfilled their part of the bargain. They trained him, taught him, helped him realize what he wants, put him in a group and made him famous. Then it's perfectly okay for him to not fulfill his end of the bargain? His contract with SM wasn't for a lifetime. Seriously, he could've finished it then leave. Like Henry did, that was non-drama and amicable. And of course, there's Lay who's still with SM fulfilling his contract.

tha's guy always looked like a hypocrite from the first day he debuted in exo, he always self-victimizing and complaining with an arrogance. Now he again tries to get attention with his complaints about sm or exo or etc, We all know that sm did not let that almost all their artists can compose their own music, ok... but now in the last years sm has been trying to give more freedom to many of their artists to compose their own songs/music. look at SM-station. SM is trying to be less hard with their artists. We also know that the training years at sm are really very hard, sm artists really work veryyyyy hard to get to polish or improve their skills or talents, I'm sure that Kris didn't not like it, he prefers the easy way without much effort nor hard work so he prefers to make music in his country.with his own rules, ok! do what you want but without using the fame of others, pls!. To be honest kris's music is not that good.

The kpop every day is more admired and loved worldwide because all the kpop artists work very hard to improve their talents and skills and show great artistic quality worldwide.

I don't understand how anyone could hate on Kris wanting to create his own music. SM has very good casting skills and talented idols but it's frustrating to hear that they tell their artists NOT to compose. Shutting down their creativity just to follow their robotic SM formula makes no sense to me. For comparisons sake, who knows how many potential Zico, GD, IUs (examples of successful solo artists that compose) that they've killed off by telling them to do nothing.

How many at the beginning of their career? The number can be counted on one hand. SM doesn't trust their idols with their own music until they already have the established name recognition to sell the music by their name, or groups name alone. IF an Idol does not want to wait, and wants to immediately put their music out there it can seem very frustrating. SM (and most companies) trains their crop of idols to be idols, not composers, producers and writers. That becomes an added bonus after the fact to further cash in on the brand. Groups that are the counter-example to this are because it is part of their brand.

SNSD once said in an interview that SM discourages their idols from producing music. SM beleive that they have hired the best of global producers so their artist should just focus on their performances.

i've checked the numbers and artist discographies. less than 5% of SM idols have actually composed. is that really a number that you can confidently say "you do know that there are sm idols who create their own music"?

EXACTLY!!! Your comment is spot on. This idea that idols have to "pay their dues" before many of them can take part creatively in their music and careers is so beyond ridiculous and outdated. Just like you pointed out Zico, GD and IU, can you imagine if they were in agencies who did not encourage artistic freedom?

No one hates Kris for wanting to create his own music, and you know damn well that's not why people got mad at him. Before I continue, just know I don't hate Kris and I'm happy he's doing well right now.

Anyways, people were mad at him for leaving a group abruptly and breaking contract. From a basic view, it looks like he broke contract, carried his insane popularity into China, then made millions. Everyone knows SM is like that "robotic" system where they make the music and stuff for you, especially early on, so there's no excuse to say "I have no musical freedom here I am leaving." Anyone has the right to be pissed if their employee broke a promise after you built their entire career and then left you to make millions of dollars somewhere else. You would be pissed off too if you were in a similar situation.

If he finished his contract, then moved to China to use his popularity, then everyone would just be sad, not angry. Let's be honest, Kris probably got into the group based off of his good looks and Chinese appeal, not because he showed potential to make amazing music. I really don't think the music he creates now is even good, especially if he labels it as "hip-hop." Again, I know I'm coming off as a Kris hater right now, but I'm really not. I just don't get how people don't understand the situation. Fans and SM had every right to be angry at Kris at that moment in time.

its funny looking back on when kris left exo, not saying it was kris' legal team or just how the news twisted the information, but everyone swore SM had kris in some kind of slave contract and was being so heavily mistreated that he had to leave the group. in reality, he terminated his contract simply because he didn't like the kpop idol life. a valid reason, but it just seems so different from the reasoning back then.

Well, that's how the game is played. He and his legal team had to play the victim and present the case as entirely SM's wrongdoings, otherwise he couldn't get out of it. Actually the court didn't rule in his favor. He and SM reached a compromise, same with Luhan. Tao's case is still ongoing as far as I know.

I didn't get that Kris was complaining about not being able to or he had no freedom creatively so he couldn't do the type of music he wanted. Well, it happens to a lot of performers who in the end once they got in and did all that they were contractually suppose to do but now also want to be able to freely express themselves in other endeavors once they find that there could be that possibility also that they should look into, I could understand where he's coming with that, most of them do eventually spread out or spread their wings elsewhere but at least they got their foot in the door, found out what they actually had to do before and after signing but also there's also that blank area where they can fill it out to what they could do creatively. I enjoyed that brief interview, got interested to know more about what he had to say. What bothered me in the beginning is who was that interviewer for VLAD TV, because watching that I couldn't help but think could we go on or move on to the next thing because he was persistent in wanting to know about his father, if they ever communicated or kept in touch, I mean it was irritating to him I'm sure and me too how he kept badgering Kris to know more about his dad, I thought enough, I got it, can we move on, why keep going around in circles about his dad. Kris was trying to be cordial, pleasant, but deep inside I'm sure he was getting pretty agitated, I know I would be. What was that interviewer looking for in all that about his dad. I could clearly see that Kris accepted that his dad wasn't in his life and he and his mom moved on, life goes on, waits for no one. It's his dad's loss not Kris, it's apparent that his mom did her very best in raising Kris alone without the dad, it's all about him and his mom now, that's what's more important, he's taking care of that and I'm sure she's just as proud of her son. To me, God Bless Moms, otherwise where would our kids be especially if dear 'ol dad isn't around; I should know, married at 18, divorced at 22 with 2 little ones to take care of, amazingly when he walked out, he never looked back only now, today, I'm last man standing, he's been gone since 1994 at age 47, I'm now 67; now proud granny, happy to still be here. So Kris, you are lucky to have your mom too, no matter what, she's happy and proud you're still here, successful, healthy.

To all the people saying he knew what he got himself into. So did jonghyun tho. Sometimes what looks good on paper isn’t that great. Jonghyun had freedom but it really isn’t for everyone. You guys are hypocrites if you want to sympathize for jonghyun but condemn kris for leaving. As a shinee Stan, and a bling bling Stan, this toxic community needs to stop.

See, he knows. But he wasn't going to wait around for 7 years to make music he actually believed in. How can you preach about the importance of idols putting their mental health first, then say it was Kris' moral duty to stay with a group he was unhappy in. The hypocracy hurts people's lives.

He wasn't the only one that had dreams of creating his own music. He just needed patience and would have done the that in the end. He couldn't hack it as an idol, and left the group. If he didn't want that type of career he should have just went with a different company, better yet be a solo artist.

People who are saying "But SM artists can make their own music... some of them do" lmao. Sure. But realistically MOST don't, almost none make the full song (they write the lyrics or they HELP to produce or HELP to compose), and you can bet that regardless of whether they write their own songs - even if they do completely make the full song by themselves - there's no guarantee that they'll be allowed to release it. It would still have to fit the image of the group.

As much as it is a shame that he didn't get to compose freely, it is common. We can't hate on SM. Many others do it to their idols too. If you guys are gonna hate on Kris and SM just leave. We don't need that. There is no reason to hate on Kris. I have been seeing hate on Kris and it isn't his fault. SM doesn't trust their artists with solo stuff until they have gained some recognition. Besides, Kris was very mistreated while under SM, along with the other Chinese members. All I can say is that I am glad he is happy and freely saying what he wants.

In order to show the image of China's rural and rigid country as a Cool and stylish image of Korea, put the cris, luhan & tao etc. into the international famous KPOP group

After becoming famous with kpop, We will leave the KPOP group and use it as a PR ambassador in China.

In Korea, we call them dirty bastards.

you dont have to put down an entire country for your dislike towards an artist.. if korea made idols like kris, luhan and tao then korea also made millions of dollars through chinese market and the korean entertainment industry suffered a lot due to THAAD.. so both the countries have a give and take relation..

also china is like 10 times larger than korea with the biggest population in the world so its obviously not gonna be as developed as korea.. but china do have places like beijing, hongkong and macau which are extremely developed and top metropolitian cities in the world..

Its how the world works in my opinion, just because youre a successful person in other peoples eyes(everyone is allowed to have different opinions) its not all you. So many other factors that you didnt choose beforehand are going to be a part of what you eventually become. So even if what you're saying is true there are so many people out here(myself included) that don't deserve where they are.
