SM Entertainment's art director, Min Hee Jun, revealed a behind-the-scenes story regarding group f(x) after the departure of member Sulli.

On November 30, Min Hee Jun appeared as a lecturer at the '4th Contents Insight' that opened at the Nuri Dream Square in Sangam-dong.  There, Min talked about f(x)'s fourth album, '4 Walls,' that was released last year.

She stated, "After Sulli's departure, the group was reformatted to four members, and it was so hard creating its image.  A visual member left, and we had to cover that up.  f(x)'s fourth album, '4 Walls,' was prepared with a visual member missing. I was in trouble. I also had the homework of making the group seem sturdy as a whole more than [concerning myself with] the visual.

"I mulled over what I could do to make the promotions seem fun.  Nowadays, it's like some formula to release teasers before the comeback, but it felt overdone.  That's why I prepared an event that seemed to take place at some secret location.  Our nation's idols have special characteristics about them.  You cannot ignore [the things that make them special]; [and therefore] there are so many restrictions to doing something creative in Korea's idol market."

Sounds like she feels restricted by the things expected from her when promoting idols because they have such set images and characteristics. What do you make of this?

ok. i dont think she's meant sulli is the only pretty member. i think she personally likes fx and have fun creating fx's album concepts, hence we always find fx so different and unqiue. and to see a member gone, kinds mean the image that she had for sulli is gone. so it seems imperfect to her, because she thought of an unique image for each member and when they come to together it will appear even prettier and amazing.

Why is the visual so important??? They were all visuals!

madajol shakennotstirred Thursday, December 1, 2016

Visuals is what attracts fans/knetz the most into a group and more fans means more money and attention that's why kpop sells and value visuals more than talents.

F(X) was like a 5 piece puzzle to me. When one of them is missing, it's not complete and it's obvious that it isnt. Following her leave, that 'emptiness' was so noticeable to me but I've accepted that she's left and still follow all 5 no matter the change.

Sulli's impact on f(x) isn't big, since she's not the main vocalist and is more of a visual. Unlike Jessica leaving SNSD, the impact was huge, you can clearly see the difference between OT8 and OT9, however with Sulli, it doesn't really make much difference really. If Krystal, Luna or Amber left, that would make it even more difficult and the difference would be very vast. But Sulli just did not give f(x) the X-Factor. It was KLA that really made what f(x) really is, tbh.

But still without Sulli, f(x) won't reach a high level. Sulli is the one who promoting f(x) since the beginning. And f(x) reach their peak in 2012 after Sulli joined drama TTBY.

Not really. I'm sure the reason why Krystal was added into f(x) was just so that they (SM) get to create a sense of awareness for the group as people would refer to them as "SNSD's Jessica's sister", and I feel since the beginning Krystal has been the center of everything in f(x) despite what they said about Sulli being the visual. Sure, Sulli has been promoting, but Krystal contributed more since she carried the "Jessica's sister" image, and not to forget also her incredible charisma on stage AND on photos.

Min Hee Jun, has great ideas and I liked her concepts however, her attention was mainly focused on krystal to be fairly honest, so to read her words makes me feel confused and questionable.

Though Sulli may have been the "official" visual I think the other girls fill that spot fairly easy. Plus Sulli was never a main vocal so her parts can easily be taken over by Amber or any of the other girls. I can understand that it might feel weird after working with a certain number of members for a while, but I don't feel like Sulli leaving left as big of a hole in the groups stability as they are making it out to be.

The weird thing about f(x) is that Sulli was always the official face/visual in the group. But they have always pushed Krystal as an equal and sometimes more so the visual/face/center. I also think that Luna's "transformation" aka losing a ton of weight has really enhanced their visuals as well. She really stands out these days. And Sulli was never a key component to their music. So they are completely sound without her. I will always love Sulli but f(x) hasn't missed a beat without her.
