On November 16, the Kyunggido police announced that they have arrested a 30-year-old woman who strangled and killed her own 21-month-old daughter.
According to the police report, the woman gave birth last January and was diagnosed with bipolar disorder and had been receiving treatment since April.
Recent studies have shown that 1 out of 10 new mothers in Korea become depressed after giving birth. However, those who get professional help are rare, and these cases of mothers harming their own babies are alarming the Korean society.
