V.O.S has been in the news pretty frequently this past few days but for issues unrelated to their music.
It was revealed last week that 3 member group, V.O.S (Voice of Soul) comprising of Choi Hyun Joon, Park Ji Hun and Kim Kyung Rok would not be renewing their contract with Star Empire and has now signed on with another company, ShinSaeng Management. The official statement was that V.O.S decided to not renew their contract because of differing views in music style and future plans.
The split between group and company thus appeared to be on good terms. But just 2 days later, it was sensationally revealed by Park Ji Hun himself in a phone interview that he was a father of a 4 year old son, will be expecting a 2nd child in August and is planning to finally get married at the end of the year. Park Ji Hun did not imply explicitly that Star Empire was behind the whole issue of telling him to concel all these but obviously, he couldn't take it longer and wanted to have a normal life.
On the same day, Star Empire announced that they couldn't understand the reasons behind V.O.S suddenly deciding not to renew their contract and would prohibit them (V.O.S) from using the group's name, V.O.S in future. V.O.S was originally set to renew their contract with Star Empire in July but opted not to despite negotiations going well. Star Empire claimed that that another company (ShinSaeng Management) had jumped in with a better contract offer and thus V.O.S decided to sign with them instead.
But one problem here is that the name V.O.S is copyrighted and belongs to Star Empire, which includes usage, commercial, etc rights. If Choi Hyun Joon, Park Ji Hun and Kim Kyung Rok are going to continue using the name V.O.S in future for performances, they are liable to be sued by Star Empire. ShinSaeng Management has tried to contact Star Empire about this, hoping to transfer the rights over, so that V.O.S can continue to perform under this name. But Star Empire has maintained that it's not going to do so, while expressing huge disappointment over V.O.S's actions.
A Star Empire spokesperson added that the V.O.S members had already expressed that it's no big deal even if they can't use the group name in future when they gave up on renewing their contracts. Thus, Star Empire will not be entertaining any requests from ShinSaeng Management about the name rights ownership transfer.
So did the split between Star Empire and V.O.S really happen because of differences in music style or was it because they couldn't come to terms with Park Ji Hun wanting to reveal that he was a father or was it really because of money? Regardless, we hope that V.O.S will get more freedom under ShinSaeng Management and make even better music. And also hoping that they can still use their name, V.O.S of course.
The entertainment industry is really complicated.
