Diplomatic tensions between China and South Korea reached a new high following the July 8 announcement from the U.S. forces and the South Korean Defense Ministry.

The announcement revealed the South Korean Defense Ministry and the U.S. forces' decision to deploy THAAD (Terminal High Altitude Area Defense), a missile defense system that could defend against North Korea's nuclear weapons. However, China is strongly opposed to this decision as they are uncomfortable with the proximity of such a high-tech system being deployed so close to their nation's borders. It is unclear whether South Korea will take steps to assuage these concerns from China.

What's more, this recent decision has had a negative impact on Korean entertainment as well. According to a statement by China's General Office of Television Broadcasting, there will be prohibitive measures against K-Pop artists' activities in China. This will severely limit the scope of K-pop artists' promotions and endorsements as they will be prohibited to hold activities and concerts with more than 10,000 people in attendance.

If these constraints happen, the future activities of numerous K-Pop artists in China could be in jeopardy.
