GABDONGI EPISODE 19

Recap:
Mu Yeom is shot by Chajust as fellow officer Young Ae nails the section chief. Mu Yeom cuffs him inside the car and drives around like a nut 'til Cha tells him where more victims are buried. With Ji Wool tied to a tree, Tae Oh inflates a balloon, waiting for Maria. When she doesn't show, he takes out a knife, but whenJi Wool mentions that she accompanied him to see if he could change, he switches gears and blows up another balloon. Maria shows up, and Tae Oh makes the girls play a game of rock-paper-scissors just as the original Gab Dong did. Each of the girls throws the game, losing deliberately so the winner may live.

Mu Yeom and Cha, each barely conscious from their injuries, are brought to the hospital for treatment. Mu Yeom overhears the doctors discussion: surgery is risky for the bullet in his head, but the resulting hematoma is worse.Tae Oh and his captive audience are being watched by Chul Geon and Mu Yeom (apparently there's an aerial camera above them). Finally it's time to come to the rescue, and Tae Oh grins as he holds his hands up. Chul Geon interrogates Cha, and we find out that he is simply a monster. Tae Oh dreams of being brought before the noose and upon awakening, he huddles in his cell and shudders. During his trial, Cha rushes the judges stand, bawling at them to forgive him and that he wants to live.

Q: What's hotter than a woman in a skintight suit with a gun? A: Nothing.

My take:
I love the part where Maria describes what it was like to be a victim. She admits that when Maria's friend died, she died as well. Nobody "won" in that scenario as much as they like to use it as a taunt. That was a powerful, moving scene, one in which some of the different Mariaswere being pulled together to form a new one. There are times you can be sultry, times when you can be cold and clinical, times when you can be weak, times when you must be strong, but it's difficult be one thing only. I think she's learning that, albeit slowly.

Tae Oh tells Maria there's another reason Gab Dong did not kill her. So a new wrinkle enters the plot. But wait, isn't it the end of the series? This is where the plot threads should all be resolved, and things go back to the old status quo or a new order is set up. Well, all we have to wait is a single episode, but it's a bit risky to introduce something new right before the end.

I have a hard time believing Cha's pleas for mercy. He seems to switch personas at the drop of a hat, and I think he does it to avoid the death penalty. There was a convict in the 80s who did the same: a Ken Scornienchi, who appeared to have two separate personalities. When told by the psychiatrist that multiple personalities usually come in threes, he developed a third one the next day. Crazy? No. Crafty. I think Cha's pulling a similar scam here and if that's the case, I hope he pays for it.

Tae Oh continues to develop. I really didn't see him as someone who'd be scared of dying, but this episode gave us that new dimension. I like the humanizing effect that both Ji Wool and Maria have on him. Unfortunately, while it seems he has little regard for Ji Wool (and even calls her an idiot this episode), her words did sting him some. Otherwise, he would have ended her life right there and then. Maria seemed to be getting through to him this episode, as well, letting him know his actions have an effect beyond just him and his victim. Maybe there is some hope for him, but I know he's just too dangerous to be running around free.

Ka-wi-ba-wi-bo! (Rock, scissors, paper)

This was a taut episode. The players in this drama didn't act like I expected them to act, but they almost never do. "Normal" reactions ended about the time Chul Geon beat Mu Yeom with a chair, so I guess I should be used to it by now. But I kept thinking,"If they can see them on that camera, why don't they do something? Is there maybe some morbid fascination in watching events unfold? Who's responsible if Tae Oh all of a sudden snaps and slits one of the girls' throats?" Ah well, I watch this thing because I like the twists and turns and the acting is pretty top notch, even if the actions themselves are an enigma. We only have one episode left, guys! We should have a send-off for it, a little party. Anyone got balloons? ;)
