[Spoilers!] Ep. 2 Reply 1994: Five Potential Husbands for Na Jung

Go Ara

By the end of this episode, Na Jung (Go Ara)'s parents set up the framework for the show. They know another family who runs a homestay, and that family was able to marry their three daughters off to residents. One of the five boys at the homestay will eventually marry Na Jung- but which one will it be? Let's take a look at our options.

5. Guk Young/Sam Cheon Po

Poor Guk Young (Kim Sung Kyun). He's completely lost in Seoul, his overbearing mother won't stop calling to tell Na Jung's parents how to take care of him, he looks old for his age (the character is 20, the actor is 34- a fact they like to joke about in-character, much like how '1997''s cast mentioned from time to time that Hak Chan looked like Eun Ji Won). He's got a painfully heavy accent that he can't hide no matter how hard he tries, he's anxious in social situations, and his roommate drives him up a wall. His nickname is his hometown, and nobody in the house can actually remember which hometown that is, so they're always calling him by the wrong name.

He's a potential candidate because he comes from a rich fishing family, but so far that's about all he's got going for him. He and Na Jung have barely said two words to each other, and her abrasiveness doesn't seem like a good match for his anxiety. That said, Guk Young has been given most of the voice-over narrative so far, making him a more prominent character that I initially expected him to be. We learn in episode two that both he and Na Jung are obsessively neat and tidy with their things- a trait that (as far as we know) no other characters in this drama share. So while Guk Young seems unlikely, he's not completely out of the running.

4. Hai Tai

Na Jung's parents seem to like Hai Tai (named after his favorite baseball team, the Hai Tai Tigers). He's a nice kid, well-mannered, and he cleans up well- but he doesn't seem like a super likely candidate at this point. Even in the couple of minutes that Na Jung's parents were considering him as an option (his father owns all the busses in their hometown so they have a lot of money), they got distracted because Guk Young's family has more money. Hai Tai seems to have even less in common with Na Jung than Guk Young, though his more open and friendly personality is a plus.

3. Bing Geu Re

It's hard to say much about Bing Geu Re (B1A4's Baro) at this point. He seems nice enough- mom gives him the nickname "smiley" upon meeting him- but he only had a few seconds of screentime before everyone got distracted by Chil Bong Yi (Yoo Yun Suk)'s presence. We know he's pre-med (which gives him a connection to Trash), and we know from episode zero that he's a smart kid who's under a lot of pressure from home and who wants to try new things while he's out from under his parents' roof. He seems okay for now (Plus, he's Baro, so A+ casting choice there), but there isn't a whole lot else to go on just yet- we'll have to see about this kid.

2. Chil Bong Yi

Bing Geu Rae's introduction gets cut short by the arrival of his cousin Chil Bong Yi- a kid who made waves as an impressive baseball player in high school (his nickname is a reference to the time he pitched seven shut-outs). Na Jung's father practically fanboys over him, spitting out his stats and asking about his recent wrist injury. Not a lot to go on as far as potential husband material, but he's definitely a front-runner in dad's eyes and seems to be a fan favorite.

1. Trash

Oh Trash. How it pains me to put you on this list.

I was so excited to see Na Jung and Trash (Jung Woo)'s sibling relationship play out over the course of the drama. The fact that the most Yoon Jae (Seo In Guk)-like character was actually out of the running as a potential husband seemed like a solid twist on the format of '1997'. Their love/hate dynamic of constant bickering and fighting (the laundry scenes were hilarious), but ultimately always taking care of each other was interesting and I wanted to see how their sibling relationship would factor in to the story... and all my hopes are now for naught.

Even the reason they became pseudo-siblings is pretty darn close to the reasoning in '1997'- Yoon Jae and Tae Woong (Song Jong Ho) became pseudo-members of Shi Won's family after the death of their parents and the death of Shi Won's sister, Song Joo (Jewelry's Yewon). In '1994', Trash stepped up as Na Jung's brother after Na Jung's biological brother died - no word on Trash's parents yet, but I'm going to majorly eye-roll if it turns out his parents are dead, too. Song Joo and Tae Woong were engaged, Na Jung's brother and trash were best friends. Trash even has Joon Hee (INFINITE's Hoya)'s job from the later episodes of '1997'.

All of that said, Trash and Na Jung are the only pairing in this group that have any history together, unlike '1997', where Shi Won had a long-standing relationship with both Yoon Jae and Tae Woong. Also unlike in '1997', where Shi Won denies having any feelings for Yoon Jae for as long as possible, Na Jung realizes halfway through episode two that she might see Trash as more than a friend. We haven't spent much time in Trash's head, so it's not clear exactly what his feelings for her are, but whether they're platonic or romantic or somewhere in between, it's clear that he cares about her a lot.

Despite all my whining that the set-up of Na Jung and Trash is too close to '1997''s Shi Won/Yoon Jae relationship, Trash actually is a separate character from Yoon Jae. Without going too far into detail (this post is getting long enough as it is), I'll just point out that Yoon Jae would have never sung screechy karaoke with Mr. Sung like Trash did. Trash is nowhere near as uptight as Yoon Jae was, and (unlike the prickly Yoon Jae) he doesn't seem to have any reservations about showing emotions.

As far as husband potential goes, I do like Na Jung and Trash's rapport. He can sleepily blunder around, grunt nonsense noises, and Na Jung knows exactly what he's getting at. Her organization tempers his devil-may-care attitude about everything outside of medical school, and his chill personality helps balance out her intensity. As of episode two, he's the clear front-runner, but we've got eighteen more episodes for the other guys to play catch-up. Plus, the writers may be doing a lot of repeats of stuff from '1997', but would they really bring something this major back for a repeat?

So, what do you guys think- is Trash a red herring or the real deal? Which bachelor do you hope Na Jung winds up with? Catch episode two on Drama Fever and let us know what you think in the comments!
