A 70-year-old man with dementia, who had wandered away from his family during the Chuseok holiday, was rescued by police thanks to their keen observation and swift response.
According to the police, on October 6, around 9:05 AM, Officer Jin Woo Yong of the Hongik Precinct, Mapo Police Station, and his colleagues were patrolling to monitor traffic during the holiday when they noticed something unusual on the Gangbyeonbuk-ro highway in Mapo District.
They spotted an elderly man walking in the opposite direction of traffic while holding an umbrella. Around the same time, a citizen driving toward Ilsan on the Ganbyeonbuk-rok called 112, reporting, "An elderly man is walking against traffic holding an umbrella."
Officer Jin confirmed that the person reported was the same man he had spotted at the scene and immediately escorted him to a safe location.
The 70-year-old man suffers from severe dementia, and reported told police, "I came down from Hapjeong Station," but could not recall anything beyond his name and date of birth.
The police carefully observed the man's behavior and condition, identifying him as a person showing symptoms of dementia. Using the information the elderly man provided, the police traced his address and discovered that his family had been searching the area after noticing he was missing during the Chuseok holiday. The elderly man was safely reunited with his family.
Officer Jin Woo Young's careful observation and quick response, accurately assessing the man's condition and ensuring his safe return to his family, arebeing recognized as a valuable case of accident prevention. The police department has recommended Officer Jin for a commendation from the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency Chief.
