The special counsel investigating Kim Keon Hee attempted to execute an arrest warrant against former president Yoon Suk Yeol on Friday morning, but the effort was ultimately unsuccessful.
According to a briefing in the afternoon on the same day, the special counsel's team arrived at Seoul Detention Center around 8:40 AM to enforce the warrant. However, after nearly two hours, the team left the facility empty-handed at approximately 10:40 AM.
Special Counsel Deputy Chief Moon Hong Joo personally led the operation, accompanied by several investigators. Despite four attempts made at 20 to 30-minute intervals, the warrant could not be carried out.
The special counsel's office explained that Yoon, who is currently detained at the facility, lay down on the floor and adamantly refused to comply. He was reportedly dressed only in undergarments, refusing to put on prison attire. Officials stated that the use of force risked escalating into a physical confrontation, raising concerns about potential safety incidents.
During the briefing, the team emphasized that they had informed Yoon Suk Yeol of the reasons for his arrest and urged his cooperation. However, Yoon Suk Yeol repeatedly interrupted the explanation and rejected compliance without providing a clear reason for his refusal.
While Yoon's representatives cited health reasons, the special counsel noted that he showed no signs of medical issues. They further stressed that, as a former prosecutor general and president, Yoon should set an example by cooperating with law enforcement.
The special counsel's office concluded by vowing to proceed with future attempts "following the law and principles."
