This South Korean swimmer of the Deaf National Team born in 2001 gains attention for stating he wants to break the world record

On May 1 KST, the '24th Deaflympics' was held in Brazil. Also called "the silent Olympics", the Deaflympics is an international sports event for deaf athletes. With games continuing until May 15 KST, more than 6,300 athletes from 81 different countries are participating. The sports include track, badminton, basketball, beach volleyball, bowling, cycling, soccer, swimming, and more, adding up to around 21 different sports.

A total of 81 competing athletes are from South Korea and among them, one of the athletes receiving a lot of encouragement from netizens on online communities is swimmer Chae Ye Ji

When Chae Ye Ji was young, it is said that he experienced a high fever and after being prescribed the wrong medicine, began to experience a decline in hearing ability. Further, he began to swim in order to help treat his asthma since he was in the 4th grade. Starting the sport of competitive swimming coincidentally, Chae Ye Ji stood out with his outstanding skills. Within two years of first starting to swim, in 2014, Chae Ye Ji won the 50-meter, 100-meter, and 200-meter race at the National Youth Sports Festival. Then in 2017, Chae Ye Ji competed in the Deaflympics and made it to the finals. Last year, Chae Ye Ji won 1st place in the 50-meter race at the National Sports Festival for Persons with Disabilities, with a time of 30.58 seconds.

In particular, Chae Ye Ji mentioned at the recent Deaflympics, "[My goal is to go from my] Korean record to a world record." Despite his inability to hear, Chae Ye Ji stated that he has no discomforts whatsoever when inside the water.
