A middle school student died due to a fallen basketball hoop.
According to the police and the board of education, a 14-year-old middle schooler with the last name Park passed away while playing basketball with a friend at the school playground in Gyeongnam around 12:40 pm KST on October 8.
The fatal accident occurred when Park pulled down on the hoop while sitting on top of a friend's shoulder. The fallen hoop hit Park's head, leading to a major head injury. Park was rushed to the hospital but he ultimately passed away.
It's revealed that two days before the accident, the basketball hoop fell due to strong winds. Three of the 40kg weights stabilizing the hoop were revealed to be loose.
The police plan to investigate the school for inspection failure.
