The Jeonju court of law in Korea sentenced a 33-year-old woman to a 5-year sentence for killing her child while trying to commit suicide inside her home. All of the jury members agreed that the killing was intentional and that the mother should take responsibility.

The crime occurred back in March when the woman lit coal inside of her house in order to take her own life because of financial trouble and conflicts with her husband. The coal was lit outside of the child's room but the gas fumes seeped into the small room, where the 2-year-old son was sleeping. The mother and baby were found the next morning by the father. They were rushed to the hospital but the child died while being treated.

The sentencing took into consideration that the 33-year-old was institutionalized in September 2015 for a mental disorder and that the woman could be considered feeble-minded at the time of the crime. The defense argued that the mother had no intentions to kill the child, but the jury disagreed.

Are Korean homes airtight or something? Burning a coal? Wouldn't that take more like a campfire to remove the oxygen from a space like that? Also, I wonder if they believe a prison sentence is really going to help if it's been proven she's mentally not her fittest.... seems like she should be sentenced to a psychiatric institution instead.

Korea doesn't have juries that decide guilt or innocence or sentencing.  Imagine that.  The Court can call citizens in an advisory capacity only.  It's the judges who decide the verdict and sentence.

Leave the feeble minded person with the 2-year-old... who's fault is that?!

Honestly, if someone wants to kill their self then why stop them?? It's no different than assisted suicide. Depression is a lifelong condition I've heard, so obviously if you're're going to eventually succeed. So why stop them?

SHINeeSLAYhaterS Mrs_Petty_Noodl Friday, October 21, 2016

I agree and disagree with this comment. I was diagnosed with bipolar depression when I was 12 and attempted suicide many times. But my family and friends never gave up on me. I never sought out therapy but I am now 21 and have my condition under control because I KNOW what my condition is. Mental health in Korea however, is completely taboo and no one ever wants to address problems and deal with them accordingly. I bet every dollar. I have that this woman has attempted many times before this. No one cared obviously if they left a child in her care. I agree because depression is horrible and inescapable unless you manage to understand it. I disagree because as I've said I've been in her shoes before and it's a physically and emotionally pain that's at times unbearable and death seems the only way. Because they never treated her, cared for her mentality, this horror has happened...we can only hope that one day SK will take mental disorders serious one day...

I guess killing anything is killing. Killing yourself because you can't deal with problem is cowardly. I can only understand suicide if they are dying from terminal disease or something. But I too wouldn't stop people as long as they are not troubling others. This is not the first case people trying to suicide kills someone else. Intentionally or not. Every suicide is bad if the person have family or friends. Sure your pain is gone but you scar many others. Such irresponsible act

You may not have gotten professional help, but your friends and family provided the therapy :) I hope you will be able to cope with it better and better with each passing day.

Most cases of depression are actually treatable. Usually a change in lifestyle is all that it takes to get rid of it.

Why was someone who was mentally unstable left in charge of a small child?

Sophia_Sone4ever Friday, October 21, 2016

I would really cursed her out and blame her but she was diagnosed with mental instability although that don't justify this act

growlin Sophia_Sone4ever Friday, October 21, 2016

Why would you curse out a potential mental health victim?

Sophia_Sone4ever growlin Friday, October 21, 2016

I said I will curse out somebody who did such a despicable act and I think you didn't read my other half of the comment

growlin Sophia_Sone4ever Friday, October 21, 2016

I did read the other half. I would curse her out as well but yes she is mentally unstable and it justifies her act because she's mentally unstable. She needs help, not prison time if that's where you think she should end up by claiming "that don't justify this act".

Sophia_Sone4ever growlin Saturday, October 22, 2016

I m saying no matter what kind o situation it is, it never justify the fact that a child has lost its life. But well you do you and I do mine so

SuperFly_Snuka Friday, October 21, 2016

She's responsible for it yet she only gets 5 years.. Korean savages pt. 3

misskkot Friday, October 21, 2016

why she can be so dumb! gosh!

LovelySerenity Friday, October 21, 2016

Did she not think about her child before doing what she did? If she really wanted to die so badly then there are plenty of other ways to easily and quickly execute it..But by all means she should've at least tried to seek treatment before she desperately did this..If she did try and it didn't help then at least she should have consider her innocent and helpless child who will grow up without a mother :(

pinkylovesfood LovelySerenity Saturday, October 22, 2016

She was already institutionalized before and when you have a mental disorder- you typically don't think straight. I'm not saying that she should be excused for her actions but she shouldn't take the full blame, because who in the right mind would leave a mentally unstable person with a child? Plus her husband wasn't of any help.

LovelySerenity pinkylovesfood Saturday, October 22, 2016

Oh, that's very true. I wonder how her husband feels about all this. :(
