MBC variety show ‘The Secret Friend’s Club’ has drawn attention with its star-studded lineup but is struggling with modest ratings.
The program, which premiered on February 1 KST, is an undercover gift-delivery variety show directed by Kim Tae Ho. Its first lineup included Jennie of BLACKPINK, Dex, Choo Sung Hoon, Lee Soo Ji, and Noh Hong Chul. Future episodes are set to feature actors Go Yoon Jung, Jung Hae In, Cha Tae Hyun, Park Bo Young, Lee Sun Bin, Kwanghee, and Hong Jin Kyung, raising expectations — particularly as it marks Go Yoon Jung’s first variety show appearance.
Despite the high-profile casting, ratings have been underwhelming. According to Nielsen Korea, the first episode recorded 2.1 percent nationwide, while the second fell to 1.6 percent. Even as the show moved into the main game format — including Jennie secretly preparing and delivering a gift to her “secret friend” Dex — viewership declined.
Viewer reactions have also been lukewarm. Some commented that while the cast is appealing, the show’s format feels unclear and lacks tension. Others noted that although fans enjoyed seeing new sides of their favorite stars, the overall concept did not generate strong engagement.
Critics have pointed to the structure of the program as a key issue. Unlike traditional variety formats that build suspense, ‘The Secret Friend’s Club’ reveals from the outset who is whose secret friend and who is delivering the gift. Cultural critic Kim Sung Soo noted that variety shows often thrive on mystery and audience speculation, but the lack of hidden elements reduces excitement. He also observed that the “secret friend” concept may feel somewhat outdated compared to current entertainment trends.
However, with more star appearances scheduled in upcoming episodes, the show still has room for a turnaround. Experts suggest that creating unexpected twists and better highlighting the cast’s chemistry and individual strengths could help boost viewer interest.
