Director Jang Hang Jun’s film 'The King's Warden' dominated the weekend box office and officially surpassed 1 million moviegoers.
According to the Korean Film Council’s integrated ticketing network, the film drew a total of 327,131 viewers on February 7 alone, ranking No. 1 on the daily box office chart. Since its release four days ago, the film recorded 693,031 cumulative admissions, and following weekend attendance, it has now exceeded 1 million viewers as of February 8.
The gap between the top two films was significant. Second place went to 'Choir of God,' which recorded 36,207 daily viewers, a figure nearly nine times lower than that of 'The King's Warden.' The film continues to gain strong word of mouth, driven by its story connected to the tragic history of King Danjong and the compelling performances of Yoo Hae Jin, Park Ji Hoon, Yoo Ji Tae, and Jeon Mi Do.
'The King's Warden' is set in 1457 during the Joseon Dynasty, following the political upheaval known as the Gyeyu Coup. The story portrays a village headman who willingly chooses exile for the revival of his community and a young deposed king who is also sent into exile, telling an emotional story of loyalty, sacrifice, and survival during a turbulent era.
