‘First-generation hip-hop producer’ Artisan Beats (real name Seo Jae Min) has passed away. He was 47.
According to the music industry on February 25, Artisan Beats died on February 17. News of his death was confirmed after rappers AJ and Minos, who had worked alongside him during the Master Plan Allstarz (MP, a club known for hosting hip-hop performances), shared tributes on their social media accounts.
AJ mourned, writing, “Jaemin, thank you for hanging out with me for 30 years. Rest comfortably now.” Minos also paid his respects, saying, “I hope you rest in peace, hyung.”
On February 24, the official Facebook account of the hip-hop crew Bulhandang posted a notice announcing Artisan Beats’ passing, drawing condolences from hip-hop fans.
The cause of death has not been disclosed.
Born in 1979, the late producer was a member of the hip-hop group Da Crew and was active at the Master Plan Allstarz. In addition to performing, he also worked as a producer. During his early career, he focused largely on darker-toned tracks and promoted under the stage name “Satan” rather than Artisan Beats.
However, as all of his family members except him were Christians, he eventually dropped the name “Satan,” which evoked a demonic image, and adopted the name Artisan Beats.
In 2014, he released the single 'Jimmy Chu' with Bon Kim, followed by the project EP 'Choon (Spring)' in May 2015. While 'Choon' was released, the remaining planned installments - 'Ha (Summer),' 'Chu (Autumn),' and 'Dong (Winter)' - were never unveiled, making the news of his passing all the more heartbreaking.
