Will another 17.5% ratings phenomenon be achieved again? tvN is placing a bold bet on a highly anticipated new Korean drama.
Even before its premiere, one tvN series has already ignited explosive buzz.
Recently, tvN unveiled its first-round 2026 drama lineup, along with a new target strategy. The key phrase is “tvN New Adult.” In an official statement, the network said, “Taking into account viewers’ preferences and viewing patterns, we will define our core audience as ‘tvN New Adult’ and strengthen our content strategy centered on this key target.”
According to tvN, “New Adult” refers to a generation of adults who carry real-life responsibilities while remaining attuned to trends and emotional sensibilities. Rather than being defined strictly by age, the term reflects a viewer demographic shaped by emotional outlook and consumption patterns. In line with this strategy, hybrid dramas that blend genres and themes have been placed at the forefront.
One of the standout titles is ‘Spellbound.’
The drama stars Park Eun Bin and Yang Se Jong in leading roles. It is based on the 2011 film of the same name, which drew attention at the time for its unique mix of romance and the occult. The drama adaptation follows a hotel conglomerate heiress who can see ghosts and a passionate, emotionally driven prosecutor as they conduct a joint investigation and gradually build a relationship. The structure combines romance with investigative elements.

Park Eun Bin takes on the role of Cheon Yeo Ri, a top-tier chaebol heiress and hotel CEO. Though she appears to have it all: beauty, wealth, and capability, she harbors the secret of being able to see ghosts. With wide emotional swings defining the character, much will depend on the actress’s expressive range. Yang Se Jong plays ace prosecutor Ma Kang Wook, a principled figure armed with physical prowess, intellect, and a strong sense of justice. Unwilling to compromise with wrongdoing, he remains singularly focused on solving cases. An unusual encounter draws the two characters deep into each other’s lives.
One reason the drama is drawing particular attention is the success of Park Eun Bin’s previous project, 'Extraordinary Attorney Woo.' The series recorded a peak nationwide rating of 17.5%, according to Nielsen Korea, sparking a cultural phenomenon. At the time, the figure was considered exceptional for a drama airing on a relatively new cable channel. Now, Park Eun Bin is set to return to a new genre on tvN’s main cable platform.

Still, there is no guarantee that the 17.5% mark will be repeated. The media landscape has shifted, and viewing habits are increasingly fragmented. Variables such as simultaneous OTT release, time slot scheduling, and competing programs could all influence performance. The key question is how effectively tvN’s “New Adult” strategy will attract its intended audience. Another major point of interest is how the drama will differentiate itself from the original film.
The 2011 movie condensed its emotional arc and narrative into a two-hour runtime. As a long-form series, the drama will likely expand on character backstories, supporting roles, and investigative processes. It also carries the burden of satisfying both fans of the original film and new viewers alike.

‘Spellbound’ is slated to premiere in the second half of 2026. Specific broadcast days and time slots have yet to be announced, and details about the production team will be revealed sequentially. tvN has historically demonstrated strength in genre-blending dramas, with previous successes combining romance, fantasy, and investigation. This project is poised to become a testing ground for the network’s “New Adult” target strategy.
Ultimately, attention converges on one point: Can Park Eun Bin once again capture both buzz and ratings? And will her chemistry with Yang Se Jong generate fresh synergy? The 17.5% figure remains on record. As the second half of 2026 approaches, the industry is watching closely to see whether tvN can deliver another blockbuster hit.
