A man who created and distributed illegal "deepfake" sexually explicit content featuring popular idol group members has received a suspended prison sentence. Deepfake refers to a technology that uses artificial intelligence to create fake videos by combining a person's face with another body.
On January 25, the Uijeongbu District Court sentenced the man, identified as 'A', to 1 year and 6 months in prison, suspended for 3 years. This means he will not serve jail time unless he violates the terms of his probation during that period.
'A' was charged with operating a Telegram chat room for about four months starting in December 2024. During this time, he used editing software to create fake pornographic images and videos approximately 330 times by synthesizing the faces of famous celebrities and his own acquaintances onto nude bodies. It was confirmed that members of top girl groups such as aespa, LE SSERAFIM, and NewJeans were among the victims.
This ruling comes amidst a stricter crackdown by entertainment agencies. Previously, Source Music, the agency representing LE SSERAFIM, vowed "zero tolerance" against such crimes. They publicly stated that they would take strong legal action without any settlements to protect their artists from malicious content and sexual harassment, highlighting the industry's intensified war against digital sex crimes.
