The Netflix variety show 'Three Idiots in Kenya' has successfully concluded its run, securing the top spot in domestic rankings and reigniting interest in the 'New Journey to the West' franchise.
According to the streaming platform, 'Three Idiots in Kenya' released its final episodes (4 through 6) on December 2. This variety show features Lee Soo Geun, Eun Ji Won, and Kyuhyun engaging in a chaotic travelogue in Kenya, Africa.
Despite concerns regarding the shift from television to an OTT platform and the spin-off format featuring only three members, the show achieved significant success. It ranked number one in the Netflix Korea Top 10 Series category for the week of November 24 to 30, surpassing major drama series.

Episodes 4 to 6 showcased the cast experiencing local attractions such as a safari tour and hot air balloon ride, combined with signature games like the Mafia game, Charades, and a writing contest. In particular, a logic game involving the members role-playing as a lion, a giraffe, and a tree highlighted their trademark "love-hate chemistry," reminiscent of the original 'New Journey to the West' series.
The show also incorporated modern elements, such as a drawing battle utilizing the AI service ChatGPT, adding a fresh twist to the familiar format. Kyuhyun's humorous anecdotes about his past managers during the Mafia game further engaged viewers, contributing to the program's popularity.
The success of 'Three Idiots in Kenya' has led to increased speculation regarding the potential revival of 'New Journey to the West', which has been on hiatus since 'New Journey to the West 8' ended in 2020 and the TVING spin-off 'New Journey to the West Special: Spring Camp' in 2021.
This project came about through a process similar to 'Three Meals a Day: Three Meals in Iceland' (2019), which was produced as a result of a game prize and a YouTube subscriber pledge. With the success of this Kenya edition, possibilities for future installments involving previously mentioned themes such as trips to the Himalayas, Alaska, or a cruise have opened up.

Producer Na Young Seok has reportedly shown positive reactions to expanding the series through YouTube live streams. Consequently, fans are expressing hope that the momentum from 'Three Idiots in Kenya' could lead to the production of a new season of 'New Journey to the West'.
