Comedian Park Na Rae, who is currently facing allegations of managerial abuse and illegal medical procedures, has been accused of failing to enroll her former managers in South Korea’s mandatory social insurance system.
On December 12, Munhwa Ilbo reported on an interview with Park Na Rae’s former manager, identified as A.
According to A, he began working with Park Na Rae in September of last year and repeatedly requested enrollment in the four major social insurance programs, including National Pension, National Health Insurance, Employment Insurance, and Industrial Accident Compensation Insurance. However, those requests were allegedly denied.
A further claimed that while Park Na Rae herself, her mother, and her former boyfriend were enrolled in the four major insurance programs, her managers were excluded. He alleged, “There was no written contract, and my salary was paid after deducting only 3.3 percent in taxes. I was forced into an unwanted freelancer arrangement.”
A stated that he was enrolled in the four major insurance programs only two months before leaving the company. He explained that this occurred because Park Na Rae registered her one-person agency as an entertainment management business. The managers were then listed as directors, which made insurance enrollment necessary.
South Korea’s four major social insurance programs are mandatory social safety nets designed to protect workers against retirement insecurity, illness, unemployment, and industrial accidents. In late September, it was revealed that several well-known celebrities operating one-person agencies had failed to properly register as entertainment management businesses, drawing widespread scrutiny.
Park Na Rae reportedly enrolled her two managers in the four major insurance programs around late September, approximately one year after their employment began.
As of now, Park Na Rae’s side has not released an official statement regarding the allegations. Meanwhile, on December 3, Park Na Rae’s former managers filed a lawsuit at the Seoul Western District Court seeking damages worth approximately 100 million KRW (about 67,800 USD), along with an application for provisional seizure of real estate assets.
Amid the growing controversy, Park Na Rae announced on December 8, “I have decided to suspend all broadcast activities until everything is fully resolved.” She has since stepped down from MBC’s 'I Live Alone' and 'Where Is My Home,' as well as tvN’s 'Amazing Saturday.'
