On November 12, comedian Park Na Rae shared an honest reflection on the pressures of her career in a new video uploaded to her YouTube channel 'Narae-sik.' In the episode featuring guest Mi Ja, the guest shared her journey from obscurity to success.
After listening to Mi Ja’s story, Park Na Rae said, “Being a celebrity is an amazing job when things are going well. I’m so grateful. But when there’s no work, it’s basically retirement. If you’re not chosen, you’re done.”
She continued, “Even after filming, I go home wondering, ‘Will they call me again tomorrow? Did I do okay today?’ That anxiety never goes away. I replay everything in my head, 'Did I make a mistake? Was I not funny enough?’ I think about it constantly.”
Park also recalled advice she once heard from senior entertainers: “They said if you gain recognition but can’t keep working, a celebrity becomes a ‘high-class beggar.’ Your face is known, but there’s nothing you can do with it. I often think about what I’ll do after this career ends.”
Park Na Rae debuted in 2006 as part of KBS’s 21st open recruitment for comedians. After nearly ten years of struggling as an unknown, she has risen to become one of Korea’s most popular variety entertainers. In 2021, she made headlines for purchasing a 55 billion KRW (approx. $4.1 million USD) home in Itaewon, Yongsan, Seoul.
